Winterberry 'Jim Dandy' (male)
Ilex verticillata 'Jim Dandy'
Pickup currently unavailable at Aiken Nursery
Ilex verticillata 'Jim Dandy' is a small shrub with an outsized job. Winterberry, the native deciduous holly, puts on one of the great shows in the winter garden, bare stems crowded with brilliant red fruit, but only female plants carry that fruit, and only when the right male blooms alongside them. 'Jim Dandy' is that male for the early-flowering winterberries, a dwarf pollinizer bred to bloom in step with them.
Timing is everything with winterberries. The species comes in two broad strains, a northern one that blooms early and a southern one that blooms later, and a female will only set fruit if a male opens flowers at the same moment. 'Jim Dandy' is an early bloomer, the classic partner for early female clones like 'Red Sprite', 'Afterglow', and 'Maryland Beauty'; for the late females, such as 'Winter Red' and 'Winter Gold', a different male like 'Apollo' is needed instead.
As a plant, 'Jim Dandy' stays neat and dwarf, four or five feet, with the same finely toothed, spineless leaves as the rest of the clan, deciduous and unremarkable through summer. That is exactly the point: this is a working shrub, tucked in for pollination rather than display, small enough to fit at the back of a border or among the females themselves without crowding them.
Plant one 'Jim Dandy' within about fifty feet of the early female winterberries meant to fruit, and a single male will service ten or more of them. Give the roots the moist to wet, acidic soil the whole group loves, in full sun to part shade, and let the females take the spotlight while this quiet partner does the essential work behind the winter berries.
