Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. "Halley's Comet" thrives best in shaded environments, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens or areas with dappled sunlight. While it can tolerate some morning sun, it should be protected from the intense afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This plant grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.0-6.5. Illicium floridanum is naturally found in wetland areas, so it performs well in soils that retain moisture. Incorporating organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, into the soil will improve its structure and fertility, creating an ideal environment for healthy growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering to maintain consistently moist soil. "Halley's Comet" does not tolerate drought well and should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, which is particularly important in warmer climates.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. Illicium floridanum "Halley's Comet" is well-suited to temperate and subtropical climates. It thrives in areas with high humidity and can tolerate heat, provided it is protected from direct sunlight. In colder regions, it may need some protection from frost, though it generally handles mild winters well.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. An additional feeding in mid-summer can help sustain the plant through the growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and promoting overall plant vigor.

Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning is not typically necessary, but it can help encourage a fuller, bushier growth habit. If the plant becomes too large or unruly, it can be cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by root rot if the soil is too wet. Ensuring the soil is well-draining and not waterlogged is key to preventing this issue. The plant is also resistant to deer browsing, making it a good choice for gardens where deer are a concern.
