Jasminum nudiflorum

$23.00 Sold out

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 6-10

Jasminum nudiflorum is a cold-hardy jasmine vine with bright yellow blooms that appear in winter. Its leafless green stems flower early in the season and bring color when most plants remain dormant.

This plant spreads from a central crown and forms trailing branches. It works well on slopes, banks, or as ground cover. Some gardeners train it on trellises for structured growth.

Though called white jasmine in some regions, its flowers are yellow. This fragrant jasmine is native to western China and performs well in southern U.S. gardens that need early-season flowers and low maintenance.

Light

Jasminum nudiflorum thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best flowering display, plant it in a location that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day. It can tolerate partial shade but may have fewer blooms.

Soil

Winter Jasmine prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH. It can adapt to various soil types, from sandy to loamy, but avoid overly heavy or waterlogged soils.

Water

This jasmine is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish a strong root system, then water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. During hot, dry periods, increase watering frequency to maintain moisture.

Humidity & Temperature

Jasminum nudiflorum is hardy to USDA zones 6–10 and can withstand winter temperatures down to about -10°F (-23°C). It adapts well to various humidity levels, making it suitable for different climates. In colder climates, it may benefit from mulching around the roots for added protection in winter.

Fertilizer

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support new growth and flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they promote foliage growth over flowers. A yearly application of compost around the base also boosts nutrients and soil health.

Pruning

Prune after flowering in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and shape the plant. Cut back any overly long or unruly branches, and remove dead or weak stems. Winter Jasmine can be trained along walls or trellises but also makes a great cascading plant on slopes or banks.

Support

Though not a true climber, Jasminum nudiflorum can be trained to climb if tied to a trellis or fence. It naturally grows as a semi-trailing shrub and can be used for ground cover on slopes, where it spreads out attractively.

Pests & Diseases

This jasmine is generally pest- and disease-resistant but occasionally may experience issues with aphids or spider mites. These can be managed with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Additional Tips

Jasminum nudiflorum is known for its early yellow blooms that appear in late winter to early spring, often before the foliage emerges. It's a hardy choice for adding winter color to the landscape and is ideal for covering walls, cascading over slopes, or as an accent plant in mixed shrub borders.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
