Jasminum x stephanense, the Stephan jasmine, is the rare pink-flowered hybrid of the group, a cross between the red jasmine, Jasminum beesianum, and the poet's jasmine, Jasminum officinale. The vigorous, semi-evergreen scrambling vine carries small, soft pink, fragrant flowers over slender stems clothed in fine pinnate leaves, combining the pink of one parent with the hardiness and perfume of the other.

The hybrid was raised in France, and, remarkably, has also been found growing wild in western China where the two parent species meet, a natural and garden cross arrived at twice over. Seldom seen in American gardens, Stephan jasmine remains a collector's plant. Hillier's Manual of Trees and Shrubs notes that this is a beautiful plant where space permits its full development, such as when covering an outbuilding.

The appeal is the color and the scent together: soft pink jasmine flowers are uncommon, and these carry a genuine fragrance over a long late-spring and summer season. The plant is vigorous and wants room, scrambling readily up a fence, over a wall, or through a large shrub, building a dense, fine-textured tangle.

Give Stephan jasmine a substantial support and room to run, a large trellis, an arbor, a fence, or an old outbuilding to cover, in full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. Site the vine where the pink flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed, and prune after flowering to keep the vigorous growth in bounds. Pair with white or red jasmines for a run of jasmine color and scent.
