Mountainlaurel, 'Croft Carpet'
Kalmia latifolia 'Croft Carpet'
1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-9
Most mountain laurels are shrubs with presence—upright, woody, and a bit aristocratic. ‘Croft Carpet’ flips the script. This rare, prostrate selection stays low and spreads into a dense evergreen mat, giving you that coveted “understory finish” designers chase in shade gardens: lush, intentional, and quietly polished. Scale: stays notably low; a specimen at JC Raulston Arboretum measured about 1 ft tall
In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of soft, cup-shaped flowers characteristic of Kalmia latifolia—a native Appalachian icon celebrated for its intricate blooms and glossy leaves. And like all mountain laurels, its flowers have that delightful bit of botanical theater: the stamens sit under tension and “spring” pollen onto visiting insects.
A little history, grounded in the American woods
Mountain laurel was named by Linnaeus and honors botanist Pehr Kalm, one of the early plant explorers of eastern North America. In the wild it forms evergreen thickets along woodland slopes and edges, especially where soils are naturally acidic.
‘Croft Carpet’ takes that woodland DNA and turns it into a design tool: a way to bring year-round structure to places where turf fails and most shrubs feel too bulky.
