'Woodlanders Low Form' is a rare, shrubby selection of the goldenrain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata), a compact form that trades the usual rounded canopy for a low, dense frame of ten to twelve feet. The elegant, pinnate compound leaves and the showy summer panicles of small, bright yellow flowers are all present, simply gathered into a modest footprint that suits a small garden far better than the full species.

The backstory is half the charm. This low form was originally collected at the Chollipo Arboretum in Korea, where the plants grew near coastal beaches, and was introduced to the United States by Woodlanders years ago. The journey did not end there: David Geiger later found a specimen labeled 'Woodlanders Low Form' at the Cornell Arboretum in New York, and from there seed traveled to Massachusetts and eventually back to the Woodlanders garden, proof that a truly special plant tends to find the way home.

The same selection is sometimes circulated under the name 'Beachmaster', a nod to those Korean coastal origins, but Woodlanders keeps the older name 'Woodlanders Low Form' in honor of the unusual history and the coastal toughness the plants carry. Like the species, the goldenrain tree has long been valued in China both for a clear yellow dye drawn from the flowers and for a place in traditional medicine, a lineage this compact form quietly shares.

In the garden, 'Woodlanders Low Form' is well suited to a small garden, an urban courtyard, a large container, or a collector's bed, a rare ornamental with beauty, history, and real adaptability in one modest package. Give full sun and well-drained soil of almost any texture, and site where the summer flowers and the papery, rose-tinted lantern pods that follow can be enjoyed at close range. Coastal gardeners will especially appreciate the salt-edged resilience bred into these plants.

Design Notes

The compact, ten-to-twelve-foot habit makes 'Woodlanders Low Form' a natural for a small garden, an urban courtyard, a large container, or a collector's bed, wherever a full goldenrain tree would be too large. Give full sun and well-drained soil of almost any texture, and site where the summer flowers and the rose-tinted lantern pods can be read at close range. The Korean coastal origin lends useful salt tolerance for seaside gardens.
