1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-9

This evergreen Spicebush is a shrub or small tree with glossy, alternate, eliptical leaves 1"-2" long. We obtained this as cuttings from the garden of Bobby Green of Green's Nursery in Fairhope, Alabama as "an evergreen Lindera from Taiwan". It matches the description for Lindera akoensis. This species is reported to have red fruit. It appears to be a handsome evergreen shrub that grows well in the southern garden with a sunny or semi-shady border and well-drained but moist soil. Woodlanders offers the keen gardener the opportunity to experiment with many plants that are not well-known or readily available from the ususal sources.

Flower/Foliage

Flower Description:

Lindera akoensis produces small, pale yellow flowers that bloom in early spring. The flowers are borne in clusters along the branches, often before the new leaves emerge, creating a delicate and understated display. While not showy, the blossoms exude a subtle, spicy fragrance, enhancing the sensory appeal of the shrub and attracting early pollinators such as bees.

Foliage Description:

The foliage of Lindera akoensis is glossy and evergreen, with leaves that are oval to lance-shaped and measure about 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) in length. The leaves are a deep green color, providing a lush, verdant backdrop throughout the year. When crushed, the leaves release a pleasant, spicy aroma, a signature characteristic of the spicebush family. This aromatic quality makes the foliage both functional and attractive in garden settings.

Fruit Description:

In late summer to early autumn, Lindera akoensis produces small, round drupes that mature to a shiny black. These fruits, each about 0.25 inches (6–7 mm) in diameter, are nestled along the branches and provide a striking contrast to the dark green foliage. While not edible for humans, the fruits are an important food source for birds, adding ecological value to the shrub. The glossy berries also contribute seasonal interest, making the plant a year-round ornamental feature.

Planting and Location:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In cooler regions, full sun is ideal, while in hotter climates, partial shade is beneficial to protect the plant from intense afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, loamy soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. Incorporate organic matter like compost to enhance soil fertility and drainage.
  • Spacing: When planting multiple shrubs, space them 4–6 feet apart to allow for mature growth and proper air circulation.

Watering:

  • Establishment Period: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Established Plants: Once established, maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells, as Lindera akoensis prefers consistent moisture.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. A second application in mid-summer can be beneficial if the plant shows signs of nutrient deficiency. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates.

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. If pruning is necessary, wait until after the flowers fade, as the blossoms appear on the previous season’s growth.
  • Method: Remove any dead or damaged branches to promote better airflow. Thinning out crowded areas enhances the plant's shape and reduces the risk of disease.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, monitor for common issues such as aphids or fungal diseases, especially in overly wet conditions. Ensure proper spacing and avoid overhead watering to reduce moisture on leaves, which can lead to fungal infections.

Winter Care:

  • Lindera akoensis is hardy in USDA Zones 8–9. In areas prone to frost, protect the plant by applying a 2–4 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to insulate the roots and retain moisture. Consider using frost cloths or burlap to shield the plant from extreme temperatures.
