Magnolia kobus, the kobus magnolia, is a hardy, deciduous magnolia from Japan, grown for a froth of white, lightly fragrant flowers on bare branches in earliest spring. The Japanese name kobushi, from which the species takes its epithet, means fist, a nod to the plump flower buds and knobby young fruit that look like a small clenched hand.
This is a tree that teaches patience. Grown from seed, the kobus magnolia can take many years to settle into heavy bloom, and older trees flower far more freely than young ones, but the wait is widely reckoned worthwhile: a mature specimen in full flower, white against a March sky, is a memorable sight. The form begins narrow and pyramidal and broadens with age into a rounded head of thirty to forty feet or more.
Kobus magnolia belongs to the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae, and the genus honors Pierre Magnol, the seventeenth-century French botanist. Unusually tolerant of soils that trouble other magnolias, including limestone and alkaline ground, the species is valued by nurseries as a sturdy rootstock and as a parent of fine garden hybrids, most famously Magnolia x loebneri, a cross with the star magnolia that inherits the kobus toughness and the star magnolia's earlier, freer flowering.
Give the kobus magnolia full sun to part shade and ordinary, well-drained soil, and be forgiving about pH, since few magnolias are so adaptable. Site the tree where the early white bloom will show against evergreens or an open sky, and plant for the long term, as a specimen or a lawn tree that will reward the next chapter of a garden's life. There is little fall color to speak of; the gift here is that early, hopeful flowering at the very hinge of winter and spring.
