Magnolia stellata "Royal Star"

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 4-9

Star Magnolia, a hardy Japanese species, is a large rounded shrub with deciduous leaves 3-4 inches long. It is valued for its late winter or very early spring display of white star-like blossoms which cover the plant before the leaves come out. 'Royal Star' is considered one of the best of many named varieties. Should be planted in full sun in a rich organic soil that is well-drained but kept from getting too dry. Blooms can be ruined by late frosts or freezes but a great show in years when this does not happen.

Overview:
Magnolia stellata ‘Royal Star,’ commonly known as Royal Star Magnolia, is a compact deciduous tree or large shrub prized for its early-spring display of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers. Native to Japan, it is ideal for smaller gardens, foundation plantings, or as a stunning focal point. This cultivar thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

Light Requirements:

  • Full Sun to Partial Shade: Prefers full sun for maximum flowering but can tolerate partial shade, particularly in warmer climates.

Soil Requirements:

  • Soil Type: Grows best in rich, well-draining, loamy soil with organic matter.
  • pH Preference: Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0) is ideal.
  • Moisture: Requires consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Mulching helps retain moisture.

Watering:

  • Frequency: Water deeply once a week during the growing season, especially during dry periods. Newly planted trees require more frequent watering to establish.
  • Drought Tolerance: Low; regular watering is needed for optimal health and flowering.

Fertilization:

  • Frequency: Fertilize once in early spring before new growth begins.
  • Type: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for flowering shrubs or trees. Avoid over-fertilizing as this can reduce flower production.

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune after flowering in late spring to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Technique: Minimal pruning is required, as this cultivar has a naturally rounded growth habit.

Temperature and Hardiness:

  • USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 4–9.
  • Temperature: Tolerates cold winters, making it suitable for northern gardens. Protect from late frosts, which can damage flowers.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Pests: Rarely affected by pests but may occasionally attract scale insects or aphids.
  • Diseases: Generally disease-resistant but may develop leaf spots or cankers in poorly drained or overly wet conditions. Ensure good air circulation around the tree.

Mulching:

  • Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Growth Rate and Maintenance:

  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; grows about 12–18 inches per year.
  • Mature Size: Reaches 10–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide, making it perfect for small gardens.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance once established.

Special Notes:

  • The flowers are susceptible to damage from late frosts. Plant in a sheltered location to minimize exposure to early spring frosts.
  • Best planted in spring or fall to avoid heat stress and ensure proper establishment.
  • Works well as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or near patios for its fragrant, early-season blooms.
