Flower/Foliage

Flowers:

The flowers of Nerium oleander 'Hardy Red' are its most striking feature, showcasing vibrant deep red, trumpet-shaped blooms that appear in clusters at the ends of branches. Each flower measures approximately 1.5–2 inches in diameter, with five delicately overlapping petals and a faintly ruffled edge. Blooming profusely from late spring through fall, the flowers exude a light, sweet fragrance, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This extended blooming period makes it a standout in the landscape.

Fruit:

After flowering, the plant produces slender, elongated seed pods that are 4–7 inches long. These pods are green when young, turning brown as they mature. Inside, the pods contain silky-haired seeds that are adapted for wind dispersal. While the fruit is not typically ornamental, it adds a natural element to the plant’s appearance. Note: The fruit, like all parts of the plant, is toxic if ingested.

Foliage:

The foliage is evergreen, consisting of long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves that measure 4–8 inches in length and 1–2 inches in width. The leaves are arranged in pairs or whorls of three along the stems. They feature a leathery texture with a dark green, glossy upper surface and a paler underside. The foliage forms a dense canopy, providing a lush, year-round backdrop to the plant’s vibrant flowers. Its resilience to heat and drought makes the foliage stay attractive even in challenging climates.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Planting Instructions:

  • Location: Choose a sunny spot with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Partial shade is tolerated but may reduce flowering.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil. It tolerates poor soils, including slightly salty and alkaline conditions.
  • Spacing: Allow 4–6 feet between plants to accommodate their mature size.

Watering:

  • Water deeply during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
  • Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and only needs occasional watering.
  • Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in spring and mid-summer to encourage vigorous growth and abundant blooms.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Pruning:

  • Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage new growth.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to promote continuous flowering.
  • Remove dead or damaged branches as needed.
  • Always wear gloves when pruning, as all parts of the plant are toxic.

Temperature and Hardiness:

  • Hardy in USDA zones 8–10.
  • Can tolerate temperatures down to 15°F but may experience some dieback in colder zones.
  • Protect the plant with mulch or cover during unusually harsh winters.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally pest-resistant, but watch for scale, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils.
  • Oleander leaf scorch (caused by Xylella fastidiosa) can be a concern in some regions. Remove infected plants to prevent spread.

Toxicity Warning:

  • Highly toxic: All parts of the plant (leaves, flowers, sap) are poisonous if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.
  • Exercise caution when handling the plant, and wash hands thoroughly after contact.

Additional Tips:

  • Use as a screen or hedge for privacy or as a focal point in drought-tolerant landscapes.
  • Encourage airflow around the plant to reduce humidity-related issues.
  • Pair with heat-loving companions like Lantana or Agave for a Mediterranean garden vibe.

With proper care, Nerium oleander 'Hardy Red' will reward you with long-lasting, vivid red blooms and an evergreen presence that enhances any landscape.
