Nerium oleander "Salmon"

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

Oleander is a large sun-loving evergreen Mediterranean shrub cultivated since ancient times. It has dark green leathery lance shaped leaves in whorls around the long sparingly branched stems. The fragrant flower clusters, in various colors, are showy and appear over much of the summer. Oleander is an excellent seacoast plant and often grown in containers in colder climates. It is poisonous but not likely to be ingested except by beach goers who choose Oleander sticks to cook weiners ! This beautiful double flowered form with salmon pink flowers is a Woodlanders introduction propagated from a cultivated plant in Argentina. Robert Christian reports it has been winter hardy in Birmingham, Alabama.

Flower/Foliage

Flowers:

The flowers of Nerium oleander 'Salmon' are delicate and elegant, featuring a soft salmon-pink hue with hints of peachy undertones. Each bloom is approximately 2–3 inches wide, arranged in large terminal clusters at the ends of branches, creating a lush display. The flowers are single or semi-double, with overlapping petals that have a subtle ruffled texture. Blooming profusely from late spring through early fall, the flowers emit a light, sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Fruit:

The fruit consists of long, slender, pod-like follicles that grow in pairs, measuring 4–7 inches in length. These pods start green and turn brown as they mature, eventually splitting open to release fluffy, tufted seeds adapted for wind dispersal. While the fruit is not considered ornamental, it adds a natural element to the plant's overall appearance. Caution: Like the rest of the plant, the fruit is toxic if ingested.

Foliage:

The foliage is evergreen, with lance-shaped leaves that are 4–8 inches long and 1–2 inches wide. The leaves are arranged in pairs or whorls of three along the stems, giving the plant a symmetrical, structured appearance. The upper surface of the leaves is dark green and glossy, while the underside is paler and matte. The leathery texture and dense growth habit make the foliage an attractive backdrop to the vibrant salmon-pink flowers, even when the plant is not in bloom.

Care Info

Planting Instructions:

  • Location: Select a site with full sun for optimal flowering. It tolerates partial shade but with reduced bloom production.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil. Tolerates poor soil conditions, including slightly salty and alkaline soils.
  • Spacing: Allow 4–6 feet between plants to accommodate their mature size and encourage airflow.

Watering:

  • Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots.
  • Once established, 'Salmon' is highly drought-tolerant and only requires occasional watering.
  • Avoid waterlogged soil, as this can lead to root rot.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in spring and mid-summer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
  • Do not over-fertilize, as excessive nutrients can lead to more foliage at the expense of flowers.

Pruning:

  • Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
  • Remove spent blooms (deadhead) to encourage continuous flowering.
  • Remove any dead, damaged, or crowded branches as needed.
  • Always wear gloves when pruning, as all parts of the plant are toxic.

Temperature and Hardiness:

  • Hardy in USDA zones 8–10.
  • Can tolerate temperatures down to 15°F, but may experience some dieback in colder climates.
  • Mulch around the base in winter for added protection in borderline zones.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Typically pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, or scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Oleander leaf scorch, caused by Xylella fastidiosa, can affect this plant in some regions. Remove infected plants to prevent the spread.

Toxicity Warning:

  • Highly toxic: All parts of the plant, including leaves, flowers, and sap, are poisonous if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.
  • Exercise caution when handling, and wash hands thoroughly afterward.

Additional Tips:

  • Plant as a standalone specimen or in groups for a striking hedge or border.
  • Pair with drought-tolerant plants like lavender, rosemary, or agave for a Mediterranean-inspired landscape.
  • Regular cleaning of spent flowers and leaves will keep the plant looking tidy.

With proper care, Nerium oleander 'Salmon' will reward you with its lush greenery and long-lasting salmon-pink flowers, making it a stunning addition to any garden.
