Care

  • Full Sun to Partial Shade: Parrotia persica "Lamplighter" thrives in full sun, which enhances its vibrant foliage colors, but it can also tolerate partial shade. Aim for at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and color.

Soil Requirements:

  • Well-Drained, Slightly Acidic to Neutral Soil: This plant prefers well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-draining.

Watering:

  • Moderate Watering: Water the plant regularly, especially during its first few years, to establish a deep root system. Once established, Parrotia persica "Lamplighter" is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during prolonged dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot.

Fertilization:

  • Minimal Fertilization Required: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if your soil is poor in nutrients. However, this plant typically requires minimal fertilization once established in nutrient-rich soil.

Pruning:

  • Minimal Pruning Needed: Parrotia persica "Lamplighter" has a naturally attractive shape, so it requires little pruning. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain its shape. Avoid heavy pruning as this can disrupt its natural form.

Temperature and Hardiness:

  • Cold Hardy: This plant is hardy in USDA zones 5-8. It can tolerate cold winters and thrives in a variety of climates, making it a versatile addition to many gardens.

Pest and Disease Control:

  • Generally Pest-Free: Parrotia persica "Lamplighter" is resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners. However, keep an eye out for common issues like leaf spot or powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to minimize the risk of fungal infections.

Mulching:

  • Apply Mulch to Retain Moisture: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Planting Instructions:

  • Planting Time: The best time to plant Parrotia persica "Lamplighter" is in the early spring or fall when the plant is dormant.

Spacing: Allow enough space for the tree to grow, as it can reach up to 20 feet in height and spread with maturity. Space trees at least 15-20 feet apart
