| Hardiness Zones 4-9

A commanding native of the eastern United States, Scarlet Oak inhabits dry upland forests, ridges, and sandy slopes from southern Maine to northern Florida, and westward through the Ohio Valley into parts of Missouri and eastern Texas. It is especially characteristic of well-drained, acidic soils in mixed oak–hickory forests, where it thrives in sunlit clearings and along woodland edges.

Unlike bottomland oaks that favor heavy soils, Quercus coccinea evolved for elevation and drainage—gravelly ridges, sandy uplands, and thin soils where resilience is required. This ecological preference makes it particularly well adapted to cultivated landscapes with similar conditions.

Foliage & Seasonal Drama

Leaves are deeply and cleanly cut, with 7–9 sharply pointed, bristle-tipped lobes separated by wide, rounded sinuses that cut nearly to the midrib. The surface is glossy, dark green in summer—sleek and reflective in strong light.

Autumn is where Scarlet Oak earns its name. In ideal conditions—full sun and acidic soils—the canopy ignites into vivid scarlet to crimson-red, often clearer and brighter than many other red oaks. The color can persist impressively before leaf drop, creating a luminous canopy visible at great distance.

Acorns & Wildlife Value

Scarlet Oak produces rounded, egg-shaped acorns about ½–1 inch long, enclosed one-third to one-half by a deep, bowl-shaped cap with tight scales. As a member of the red oak group, acorns mature in two growing seasons.

Ecologically, this tree is invaluable:

  • Host plant for numerous native Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), including hairstreaks and underwing moths

  • Acorn source for deer, wild turkey, squirrels, chipmunks, and many upland bird species

  • Cavity potential in maturity for owls and woodpeckers

  • Supports hundreds of insect species, forming a keystone component of eastern forest food webs

Oaks are widely recognized as among the most ecologically productive genera in North America, and Quercus coccinea is no exception—particularly in dry upland systems where fewer large canopy trees dominate.

Flower/Foliage

The foliage of Quercus coccinea is sharply sculpted and unmistakable. Leaves are typically 3–7 inches long with 7–9 deeply incised lobes, each lobe ending in a fine bristle tip characteristic of the red oak group. The sinuses (the spaces between lobes) are broad and rounded but cut dramatically inward—often nearly to the midrib—giving the leaf a bold, open architecture.

In summer, the upper surface is deep, lustrous green, smooth and faintly leathery to the touch, catching light with a subtle sheen. The underside is noticeably paler, sometimes with slight tufting along the veins in youth. Petioles are slender and often flushed reddish, adding quiet tonal contrast when viewed up close.

Autumn is where the foliage transforms from handsome to unforgettable. In full sun and acidic soils, leaves turn a clear, saturated scarlet to crimson-red, often holding color well before falling cleanly. Unlike some red oaks that trend toward russet or bronze, Scarlet Oak frequently achieves a purer red, especially in upland conditions where it naturally thrives.

The overall leaf effect is crisp, angular, and architectural—more deeply cut and dramatic than many other native oaks.

Acorns

The acorns of Quercus coccinea are refined and symmetrical, typically ½–1 inch long, oval to egg-shaped, and maturing to a warm chestnut-brown. They sit partially enclosed—about one-third to one-half—in a deep, bowl-shaped cap.

The cap itself is distinctive: composed of tight, flattened scales that create a neat, tiled surface. The rim of the cup is smooth and even, without the fringed or bristled appearance seen in some oak species. When mature, the nut detaches cleanly from the cap.

As a member of the red oak group, Scarlet Oak acorns require two growing seasons to mature. They are moderately bitter due to higher tannin levels compared to white oak species, yet still serve as an important food source for wildlife. Squirrels, deer, wild turkey, blue jays, and numerous small mammals rely on them in autumn and winter.

Visually, the acorns are proportionate and understated—never oversized, but produced reliably when trees reach maturity. Against the glossy green summer foliage or beneath a scarlet autumn canopy, they complete the seasonal narrative of the tree: structure in summer, fire in fall, sustenance in winter.

Together, the deeply cut leaves and neatly capped acorns reinforce the identity of Scarlet Oak as both a botanical classic and an ecologically generous native canopy tree.

Care Info

  • Habit: Pyramidal in youth, broadening to a rounded, open crown
  • Size: 60–80 feet tall; 40–50 foot spread
  • Light: Full sun for best structure and fall color
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, acidic soils
  • Tolerance: Excellent drought tolerance once established

Its youthful habit is reminiscent of Quercus palustris, with a strong central leader and tiered branching. Over time, the crown opens and gains breadth without losing refinement.

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
