Very Rare

| Hardiness Zones 6-8

One of the rarest oaks in North America, Quercus oglethorpensis is a southeastern native with a remarkably limited natural range and a fascinating botanical history. With narrow, refined foliage that turns orange to red in autumn, this medium-sized oak offers both conservation value and ornamental merit.

Excellent species profile available here.

Discovery & History

Oglethorpe Oak was first formally described in 1940 by botanist Wilbur H. Duncan, based on material collected in Oglethorpe County, Georgia—hence its name. For decades it was known from only a handful of isolated populations in Georgia and South Carolina, with scattered reports from Louisiana. Its rarity and patchy distribution have made it a subject of ongoing botanical interest and conservation concern.

Unlike widespread southern oaks, Quercus oglethorpensis occurs in very localized stands, often associated with well-drained upland sites and mixed hardwood forests.

Acorns & Ecology

As a member of the red oak group, Quercus oglethorpensis produces acorns that mature over two growing seasons. The nuts are enclosed by a shallow cap and serve as an important wildlife food source where populations occur.

Ecologically, the species contributes to local biodiversity in the limited regions where it survives. Like other native oaks, it supports numerous caterpillar species and thus plays a role in sustaining bird populations and broader woodland food webs.

Because of its rarity, planting this oak can be seen not only as an ornamental decision, but as a small act of ex-situ conservation.

Design Field Notes

  • Excellent choice for native-focused landscapes

  • Appropriate for campuses, parks, and larger residential properties

  • Strong fall color without overwhelming scale

  • Pairs well with native understory shrubs and grasses

Because of its rarity, placement should be thoughtful—allow space for full canopy development and long-term growth.

Why Grow It?

Quercus oglethorpensis is not a common shade tree—it is a botanical treasure of the Southeast. With refined foliage, warm fall color, and a compelling conservation story, it offers both beauty and significance. For collectors of rare natives and designers seeking meaningful canopy trees, Oglethorpe Oak stands apart.

Flower/Foliage

 Foliage & Form

The foliage is distinctive among southeastern oaks. Leaves are:

  • Narrowly elliptic to oblong
  • 3–6 inches long
  • Shallowly lobed or coarsely toothed
  • Dark green above with a lighter underside

The overall effect is more streamlined and refined than many broader-leaved red oaks. In autumn, the canopy shifts to clear orange-red to reddish-bronze, often providing strong seasonal color in favorable conditions.

The tree typically matures at 40–60 feet, forming a rounded to broadly oval crown—substantial, but not massive. Its moderate size makes it more adaptable to residential and institutional landscapes than many larger oak species.

Care Info

  • Light: Full sun preferred
  • Soil: Well-drained soils; likely adaptable to typical upland conditions
  • Moisture: Moderate; avoid prolonged waterlogging
  • Hardiness: Well suited to the southeastern United States

Given its native distribution, it is best adapted to climates similar to Georgia and South Carolina—warm summers, moderate winters, and good drainage.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
