'Frosty' is a named cultivar of Rhododendron alabamense. Cuttings of this form were shared with us by our "Plant Nut" friend Dean Jolly. It is said to have been selected years ago in southwest Georgia by Terry Greer and his name is sometimes used for this cultivar. It has the typical white fragrant flowers with a yellow blotch characteristic of the species but was selected for the good and somewhat glaucous foliage.

Deciduous

Flower/Foliage

Rhododendron alabamense 'Frosty', commonly known as the Alabama Azalea 'Frosty', is a deciduous shrub renowned for its fragrant blooms and attractive foliage.

Flowers:
In mid to late spring, 'Frosty' produces clusters of 6 to 10 funnel-shaped white flowers, each adorned with a prominent lemon-yellow blotch on the upper petal. These blooms emit a strong lemon fragrance and feature elegantly protruding stamens. Notably, the flowers often appear before or simultaneously with leaf emergence.

Foliage:
The leaves are dark green, simple, and alternate, with smooth or toothed margins. They are typically ovate to obovate in shape and measure approximately 2 to 3 inches in length. The foliage provides a lush backdrop to the spring blooms and may exhibit subtle color changes in the fall.

Fruit:
Following the flowering period, 'Frosty' develops elongated brown capsules that contain numerous small seeds. These capsules mature in the fall and can persist into winter, adding textural interest to the shrub's appearance.

Care Info

Light Requirements:
Plant 'Frosty' in a location with partial shade, receiving direct sunlight for 2 to 6 hours daily. This exposure ensures optimal growth and flowering while protecting the plant from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Soil Conditions:
This azalea prefers well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter. A soil pH between 4.5 and 6.0 is ideal. Incorporate composted pine bark or leaf mold to enhance soil structure and fertility. Ensure the planting site has good drainage to prevent root rot.

Watering:
Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, to support the shallow, fibrous root system. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as 'Frosty' does not thrive in wet, poorly aerated soils. Mulching with organic materials like pine straw or bark helps conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Fertilization:
Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Avoid excessive use of lime or alkaline fertilizers, as they can harm the plant. Fertilizing should be done in April or May, but avoid fertilizing after July to prevent tender growth susceptible to winter damage.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or injured branches after flowering to maintain shape and health. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the plant.

Winter Protection:
In colder climates, protect 'Frosty' from harsh winter winds and sun to prevent leaf scorch and desiccation. Mulching helps insulate the roots, and providing windbreaks or covering the plant during extreme cold snaps can offer additional protection.

Pest and Disease Management:
Monitor for common pests such as aphids, borers, and lace bugs. Diseases like root rot and powdery mildew can occur, especially in poorly drained soils. Implement good cultural practices, such as proper spacing for air circulation and avoiding overhead watering, to minimize issues.
