A luminous early-spring native azalea, ‘Varnadoe’s Moonbeam’ opens in clear golden yellow brushed with soft orange—an uncommon and glowing color in the woodland garden. Selected from the Florida native Rhododendron austrinum, this heirloom cultivar carries both horticultural beauty and Southern azalea history.

The Plant & Its Lineage

Rhododendron austrinum, commonly known as the Florida Flame Azalea, is native to the southeastern United States—primarily Florida and southern Georgia, extending into Alabama and Mississippi. It naturally inhabits open pine woods and woodland edges, often in sandy, acidic soils with seasonal moisture.

‘Varnadoe’s Moonbeam’ is considered either a superior selection of the species or a closely related hybrid form. It was associated with the late and highly respected native azalea plantsman Aaron Varnadoe of Colquitt, Georgia, whose breeding and selection work significantly shaped Southern native azalea cultivation. This particular clone was later distributed through Superior Trees in Florida and continues that legacy of regional excellence.

Design Field Notes

  • Ideal for woodland borders and naturalistic plantings
  • Pairs beautifully with ferns, trilliums, and other spring ephemerals
  • Effective when massed for a wash of early-season color
  • Striking against dark evergreen backdrops such as Illicium or Ilex

Allow space for air circulation and natural form—this is a shrub that reads best when allowed to develop gracefully rather than sheared.

Why Grow It?

‘Varnadoe’s Moonbeam’ combines regional heritage, reliable performance, and refined color. It offers the soft gold spectrum that is less common among native azaleas, while preserving the early bloom time and Southern adaptability of Rhododendron austrinum.

For gardeners who value native plants with story and provenance, this selection carries the quiet legacy of one of the South’s great azalea growers—now ready to illuminate the spring woodland once again.

Flower/Foliage

Blooming in early spring—often before full leaf emergence—the flowers appear in generous clusters at the branch tips. Each bloom features:

  • Broad, gently flaring petals
  • A saturated golden yellow base
  • Soft apricot to orange tints in the throat and along the upper lobes
  • Gracefully extended stamens that add movement and delicacy

The color is warm but refined—more golden and moonlit than fiery—distinguishing it from the brighter orange forms of the species. In morning or late afternoon light, the flowers seem to glow against the still-bare woodland backdrop.

Like the species, the blooms are lightly fragrant and highly attractive to early pollinators.

After flowering, fresh green leaves emerge, elliptic and slightly pubescent when young. The plant develops into a loosely upright, deciduous shrub typically 6–10 feet tall, with a naturalistic, open habit that suits woodland settings.

Autumn foliage may take on muted yellow to orange tones before leaf drop.

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
