It naturally inhabits open pine woods and woodland edges, often in sandy, acidic soils with seasonal moisture.

‘Varnadoe’s Moonbeam’ is considered either a superior selection of the species or a closely related hybrid form. It was associated with the late and highly respected native azalea plantsman Aaron Varnadoe of Colquitt, Georgia, whose breeding and selection work significantly shaped Southern native azalea cultivation.
