Swamp Rose

Rosa palustris

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-9

If you’ve been dreaming of a rose that’s as at home along a pond edge as it is in a thoughtfully wild garden, Rosa palustris—better known as swamp rose—might just be your match. This tall, somewhat thorny native shrub produces fragrant, single pink flowers through the summer and brings a soft, untamed beauty to wet or seasonally moist soils.

A true native to the eastern U.S., swamp rose naturally thrives in sunny to part-shaded spots with consistent moisture—think streambanks, rain gardens, or low-lying sunny areas in your landscape. It’s especially beloved for its role in supporting native pollinators, and in fall, the bright rose hips are a favorite of birds.

Tough, charming, and a little wild, Rosa palustris is perfect for those looking to naturalize a space or bring a more ecological approach to their gardening. It may not be the tidy hybrid tea rose, but it’s every bit as special.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light:

Prefers full sun to partial shade. More sun encourages heavier blooming, but it will tolerate light shade, especially in warmer climates.

Soil:

Thrives in moist to wet soils—it naturally grows in swamps, bogs, and wet meadows. Ideal for clay soils, low-lying areas, rain gardens, or pond margins. Tolerates a range of soil types as long as moisture is consistent.

Water:

Keep soil consistently moist, especially during establishment. It is not drought-tolerant and prefers wet feet. Once established, it’s reliable in areas with natural water flow or consistent rainfall.

Spacing:

Plant 4 to 6 feet apart to allow for natural spread. Mature height ranges from 5 to 7 feet tall, with a similar spread.

Pruning:

Minimal pruning needed. You can remove dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring. Prune to shape if desired after blooming. Allowing hips to form supports birds and adds fall interest.

Fertilizer:

Generally not needed in rich soils. If desired, apply a balanced, organic fertilizer in early spring.

Pests/Disease:

Relatively resistant to common rose diseases like black spot and mildew. Can attract aphids, but they are usually controlled by beneficial insects in a native planting.

Wildlife Value:

Flowers attract bees and butterflies; rose hips feed songbirds and small mammals. This plant is an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, wildlife habitat restoration, or naturalized landscapes.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
