A charming citrus hybrid for container gardens, winter patios, and kitchen harvests.

× Citrofortunella mitis 'Calamondin', commonly known as the Calamondin Orange, is a compact, cold-tolerant citrus hybrid treasured for its abundant fragrant blossoms, ornamental appeal, and tart, edible fruit. A natural cross between the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and the kumquat (Fortunella spp.), Calamondin is equally at home on the patio or in a bright kitchen window, offering both beauty and bounty year-round.

This small evergreen tree or shrub is known for its glossy, deep green leaves, fragrant white flowers, and heavy crops of small, round orange fruit that resemble miniature tangerines. While the fruit is too tart to eat out of hand, it’s prized in culinary uses for its intense citrus flavor—perfect for marmalades, marinades, drinks, and preserves.

A favorite for container gardening, Calamondin stays manageable at 4–6 feet tall when potted and pruned. It thrives in full sun with well-drained soil, and performs best in climates with mild winters (Zones 9–11), though it can be overwintered indoors in colder regions. With its ability to bloom and fruit simultaneously, this plant offers a continuous cycle of interest and a delightful citrus fragrance indoors or out.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
