Chinese Hat Plant

Holmskoldia sanguinea

$23.00
Low Stock

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

The Chinese Hat Plant is a viney shrub native to the Himalayas and southeast Asia. Leaves are thin, green, several inches long and 2 inches wide with a long tip and serrated edges. They are borne opposite or in whorls on long willowly stems which can be trained up on a fence or support. Their ornamental feature is the orange flowers which appear in the fall. These are shaped like a Mandarin hat with a slightly cupped flat circular base and a projecting flower in the center. This plant is a great ornamental for zones 9 and 10 and for protected spots in zone 8 where it will freeze down in winter but re-grow and flower the next fall.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Holmskoldia sanguinea thrives best in bright light, which encourages vigorous growth and abundant flowering. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade may help prevent leaf scorch, but in general, more light will result in better flowering.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. This plant prefers fertile, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (6.0-7.5). It can adapt to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, as long as they drain well. Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil structure and fertility.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During dry periods, regular watering is necessary to maintain soil moisture. However, once established, Holmskoldia sanguinea is relatively drought-tolerant.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-10. Holmskoldia sanguinea prefers warm, tropical to subtropical climates. It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 40°F (4°C). In cooler regions, it can be grown in containers and brought indoors during the winter. The plant thrives in moderate to high humidity but can adapt to drier conditions if adequately watered.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Additional feedings during the growing season can help sustain the plant’s vigor. Using a fertilizer high in phosphorus can promote more prolific flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers.

Pruning: Prune after the flowering period to shape the plant and control its size. Holmskoldia sanguinea can become leggy, so regular pruning helps maintain a bushier and more compact form. Cutting back the plant by about one-third in late winter or early spring encourages new growth and more abundant blooms.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, or whiteflies. Good air circulation around the plant helps prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and garden hygiene can help prevent problems.
