Redbay
Persea borbonia
| Hardiness Zones 7-9
Persea borbonia, known as Redbay, is a handsome broadleaf evergreen native to the southeastern United States, ranging from coastal Virginia through Florida and westward along the Gulf. Related to the Avocado, this tree shares the laurel family’s characteristic fragrance, with aromatic leaves that have long been used in the kitchen in much the same way as bay laurel (Laurus nobilis).
Redbay is often mistaken for its close cousin, Swampbay (Persea palustris), but it distinguishes itself by subtle marks: the absence of stellate hairs beneath the leaves, fruits borne on short stalks, and a preference for somewhat drier ground. It is frequently found on coastal dunes, sandy ridges, and well-drained hammocks, where its evergreen canopy lends both shade and structure to the native landscape.
As an ornamental tree, Redbay offers year-round greenery, a moderate size suitable for gardens and parks, and a pleasingly dense form. It thrives in acidic, sandy soils and adapts well to a variety of sites beyond its natural range. Its glossy foliage makes it a fine candidate for use as a specimen tree or grouped in native plantings where permanence and ecological value are desired.
In recent years, however, Redbay has faced a formidable challenge. The arrival of laurel wilt disease, carried by the redbay ambrosia beetle, has devastated populations across much of its natural range. This loss has been keenly felt, not only in the landscape but also in regional ecology: Redbay fruits provide food for birds and small mammals, and the leaves serve as a host for the Palamedes swallowtail butterfly. Plantings established inland or beyond the beetle’s reach may yet serve as a safeguard, preserving the species where nature has been less kind.
Though its leaves may sometimes carry harmless insect galls in the wild, these curiosities rarely trouble cultivated specimens. For gardeners, Redbay remains an evergreen native of quiet beauty and cultural depth, a reminder that even in adversity, a tree’s value persists in its shade, fragrance, and connection to the long story of the southern coastal plain.
