Cestrum nocturnum

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-11

Scandant or spreading shrub in frost free climates but perennial in zone 8. Very fragrant clusters of tubular yellowish flowers that are fragrant at night. Plant in sheltered spot where powerful fragrance at night will be enjoyed. Cut back plants after the frost kills the tops. Mound 10 inches of coarse sand over the stubs. Mulch over with pine straw. As weather warms, remove this covering to allow new shoots to emerge. Given rich soil and ample water, these plants will thrive during hot summers. Possibly native to the West Indies but now widespread and sometimes invasive in the tropics.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes the best growth and flowering, but it can tolerate some shade, particularly in hotter climates.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and drainage.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply to ensure the root zone is well-hydrated. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11. Prefers warm temperatures and high humidity. It is frost-sensitive, so in cooler climates, consider growing it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter or provide frost protection.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. An additional application of liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season can enhance bloom production.

Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Light pruning helps promote new growth and a tidier appearance. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for garden beds, borders, and as a container plant. Its fragrant night-blooming flowers are perfect for planting near patios, windows, or outdoor seating areas where the scent can be enjoyed in the evening.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
