Pink Trumpet Vine

Podranea ricasoliana

$21.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 9-11

Podranea ricasoliana, commonly known as the Pink Trumpet Vine or Port St. John's Creeper, is a fast-growing, evergreen vine native to the warm regions of South Africa. It was first identified and cultivated in the eastern part of the country, particularly around the area known as Port St. John's, which influenced one of its common names. The plant belongs to the Bignoniaceae family, known for its showy, trumpet-shaped flowers.

Podranea ricasoliana’s horticultural journey began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it was introduced to other regions with similar climates, such as the Mediterranean, Australia, and parts of the United States. The vine quickly gained popularity due to its vigorous growth and ability to thrive in warm climates, often covering large walls or structures with its lush foliage and striking pink flowers.

Will likely freeze to ground in zones 8 and 9 but make much growth in warm weather with good conditions. Plant in sunny site with well-drained soil and allow ample space to climb. Protect roots from freezing by mulching base with sand and pine straw for the winter.

Flower Description:

Podranea ricasoliana produces stunning clusters of large, trumpet-shaped flowers that are soft to vibrant pink with a delicate magenta throat. The flowers typically appear in late summer to fall, bringing a striking burst of color to the garden during the cooler months. Each flower measures about 2 to 3 inches long and features gently flaring, five-lobed petals. The blooms emit a subtle, sweet fragrance, which attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Foliage Description:

The foliage of Podranea ricasoliana consists of dark green, glossy leaves that are pinnately compound. Each leaf is made up of five to nine oval leaflets, each leaflet measuring about 2 to 3 inches long. The leaflets have smooth edges and a leathery texture, providing a lush, tropical appearance. The vine's dense foliage creates an excellent screen or privacy cover when trained on trellises or walls.

Light: Podranea ricasoliana thrives in full sun to partial shade. It performs best when exposed to at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, although it can tolerate some afternoon shade in hot climates.

Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, but ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging. Once established, it becomes moderately drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during dry periods.

Soil: This vine prefers well-draining, fertile soil. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, from sandy to loamy, but grows best in soil that is rich in organic matter.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) during the growing season in spring and summer to promote healthy growth and blooming. Fertilize once a month or use a slow-release fertilizer at the start of the growing season.

Pruning: Prune Podranea ricasoliana lightly to maintain shape and control its vigorous growth. Prune back after flowering to encourage more blooms next season and remove any dead or damaged stems. It can be pruned heavily if needed to keep its size in check.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm climates and is frost-sensitive. It thrives in USDA zones 9-11. If grown in cooler areas, it can be planted in a pot and brought indoors during colder months, or protected with a frost blanket.

Support: As a climbing vine, it will need a trellis, fence, or other structure to support its growth. Make sure it has plenty of space to spread, as it can grow quite large over time.

Pests and Diseases: Podranea ricasoliana is generally pest-free but may occasionally attract aphids or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew in areas with poor air circulation, and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
