Pink Trumpet Vine
Podranea ricasoliana
1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 9-11
Podranea ricasoliana, commonly known as the Pink Trumpet Vine or Port St. John's Creeper, is a fast-growing, evergreen vine native to the warm regions of South Africa. It was first identified and cultivated in the eastern part of the country, particularly around the area known as Port St. John's, which influenced one of its common names. The plant belongs to the Bignoniaceae family, known for its showy, trumpet-shaped flowers.
Podranea ricasoliana’s horticultural journey began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it was introduced to other regions with similar climates, such as the Mediterranean, Australia, and parts of the United States. The vine quickly gained popularity due to its vigorous growth and ability to thrive in warm climates, often covering large walls or structures with its lush foliage and striking pink flowers.
Will likely freeze to ground in zones 8 and 9 but make much growth in warm weather with good conditions. Plant in sunny site with well-drained soil and allow ample space to climb. Protect roots from freezing by mulching base with sand and pine straw for the winter.
