Clematis crispa

Clematis crispa, the swamp leather flower, is a small and delicate native vine that trades the flat, showy face of a garden clematis for something quieter and stranger. The flowers hang solitary and nodding, little urns of thick, leathery blue-purple, paler within, their four recurved sepals frilled and crimped at the tips like curled ribbon. Slightly fragrant and endlessly charming, this is a clematis scaled for a small garden rather than a barn wall.

As the common names swamp and marsh leather flower suggest, this vine belongs to the wet places of the southeastern United States, the floodplains, swamps, wet woods, and ditch banks from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas. That wetland heritage makes the plant unusually tolerant of moist and even soggy ground, where few flowering vines will grow. The species name crispa means curled, for those wavy, crisped sepal margins that give the flower its curly-clematis nickname.

This is a herbaceous vine that climbs politely by twining leaf-stalks and dies back to the ground each winter, returning fresh each spring, so the plant never overwhelms a small trellis or a shrub the way a woodier clematis might. Bloom runs from late spring well into summer, followed by silky, feathered seed heads that carry the interest on. Give full sun to part shade and moist, fertile soil, keep the roots cool, and the swamp leather flower asks for little else.

Set Clematis crispa on a small trellis, an arbor, or a low fence, or let the vine scramble through a shrub at the edge of a rain garden or pond, where the nodding bells can be met at eye level. Bees and other pollinators work the flowers through the long season, and the plant fits happily into native, pollinator, and water gardens. As with all clematis, the leaves and sap are mildly toxic if eaten and can irritate skin, worth a note where children play.
