Tea Olive is an evergreen Asian shrub that can become almost tree-like in mild climates. The leaves are about 3 inches long with small marginal teeth. It is highly prized in southern U.S. gardens for the deliciously fragrant small white flowers that appear in fall. In colder regions it is a prized greenhouse plant. Dr. Michael Dirr in his Manual of Woody Landscape Plants says: "Flowers appear over such a great time frame and are so fragrant that to not try the plant is to cheat one's garden." This variety has fragrant, showy, deep yellow to orange flowers

Flower/Foliage

Flower Description:

Osmanthus fragrans f. aurantiacus, commonly known as Orange Sweet Olive, is prized for its clusters of small, four-petaled, bright orange to deep apricot-colored flowers. The blooms appear in late summer to fall, though in mild climates, sporadic flowering may occur throughout the year. These flowers emit a rich, sweet fragrance, often compared to ripe peaches or apricots, making them highly attractive for sensory gardens. The floral clusters emerge along the leaf axils, creating a striking contrast against the deep green foliage. The orange blooms distinguish this variety from the more commonly seen white-flowered forms of Osmanthus fragrans.

Fruit Description:

Like other Osmanthus species, Orange Sweet Olive occasionally produces small, olive-like drupes after flowering. These fruits are usually dark purple to black when mature and are not commonly ornamental. Fruiting is infrequent in cultivation, as most plants focus their energy on producing flowers rather than setting fruit. The small fruits are primarily of botanical interest rather than a decorative feature.

Foliage Description:

The evergreen leaves of Osmanthus fragrans f. aurantiacus are elliptical to lanceolate, ranging from 2 to 4 inches long. They have a leathery texture, a glossy deep green surface, and finely serrated or smooth margins. The dense foliage creates an elegant, lush backdrop for the fragrant blooms, making this plant ideal for hedging, privacy screens, or specimen planting. The year-round greenery enhances the garden structure and ensures visual interest even when the plant is not in bloom.

With its vibrant flowers, subtle fruiting, and lush evergreen foliage, Osmanthus fragrans f. aurantiacus is a stunning ornamental shrub that adds fragrance, beauty, and structure to gardens year-round.

Planting Location:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In regions with intense summer heat, providing afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch. gardenia.net
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to various soil types, including heavy clay. Ensure the planting site has good drainage to prevent root rot. gardenia.net

Watering:

  • Establishment: Water young plants regularly during their first growing season to establish a deep root system.
  • Mature Plants: Once established, Orange Sweet Olive is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during prolonged dry periods. gardenia.net

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid late-season fertilization, as it can encourage tender growth susceptible to winter damage. thespruce.com

Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning is needed, as the plant naturally maintains a pleasing shape. If necessary, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Be cautious, as heavy pruning can reduce flowering. hgic.clemson.edu

Mulching:

  • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally pest and disease-free. However, monitor for scale insects and aphids. If detected, treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. hgic.clemson.edu

Winter Care:

  • Orange Sweet Olive is hardy in USDA Zones 7 through 10. To protect roots during potential cold snaps, maintain a mulch layer and ensure the plant is well-watered before winter.
