$28.00 Sold out

| Hardiness Zones 6-8

This is a deciduous medium size tree in the Witchhazel family (Hammelidaceae) with rather small toothed oval leaves and exfoliating bark. This very rare tree may have been offered for the first time in the U.S. by Woodlanders. It was long thought that Parottia persica (which see) was the only species in the genus until this species was discovered in eastern China in 1960 by a Chinese botanist. Though named it was not collected again until 1988. It is rare and known from only a few sites. It has proven winter hardy at the Aronold Arboretum in Boston, MA.

  • Appearance: The flowers of Parrotia subaequalis are small, yet distinctive. They lack petals, showcasing clusters of bright red stamens that create a striking visual contrast against the bare branches.
  • Bloom Time: Late winter to early spring, often blooming before the leaves emerge, adding subtle but elegant beauty to the landscape during the dormant season.
  • Fragrance: Generally mild and unobtrusive.

Foliage

  • Spring and Summer: Leaves emerge a glossy green, slightly rounded to oblong in shape, with finely serrated edges. Each leaf typically measures 3–5 inches long, offering a lush, dense canopy.
  • Autumn: The foliage transforms into a spectacular display of colors, ranging from deep reds to fiery oranges and brilliant yellows. This dramatic change makes it a standout tree in the fall garden.
  • Winter: After the leaves drop, the tree’s exfoliating bark becomes a focal point, with its unique patchwork of gray, cream, and green tones providing interest even in the stark winter months.

Planting Requirements

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Ensure at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and vibrant fall colors.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soils. Loamy soils rich in organic matter are ideal. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or fall to allow establishment before extreme temperatures.

Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.
  • Once established, the tree is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Fertilization

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth.
  • Mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and provide additional nutrients.

Pruning

  • Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
  • Shape the tree lightly to maintain its natural, upright, vase-like form.

Pests and Diseases

  • Parrotia subaequalis is relatively pest- and disease-resistant. Monitor for signs of leaf spot, scale, or aphid infestations and treat with appropriate measures if necessary.

Special Features

  • Fall Foliage: Leaves turn striking shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn.
  • Winter Interest: The bark exfoliates in patches, revealing a mosaic of gray, cream, and green tones.
  • Flowers: Small, red flowers appear in late winter to early spring, adding seasonal interest.

Growth Rate and Size

  • Moderate growth rate. Typically grows 20–40 feet tall and 15–30 feet wide, making it suitable for medium to large gardens.

Winter Care

  • Hardy in USDA zones 5–8. Protect young trees in colder regions with a layer of mulch around the base.
