Osteomeles schweriniae, the bone apple, is a refined evergreen shrub in the rose family, close kin to hawthorn, cotoneaster, and photinia, and a botanical rarity seldom seen in American gardens. The genus name joins the Greek osteon, bone, and melon, apple, a nod to the stony hardness of the little fruits, while the species epithet honors the German dendrologist Count Fritz von Schwerin. Native to the dry valleys and open slopes of Yunnan and western Sichuan in southwestern China, the shrub carries very small, ferny, pinnate leaves along dense, wiry, arching stems, giving a fine texture unusual among broadleaf evergreens.

In late spring and summer the branches carry loose clusters of small white flowers, five-petaled and hawthorn-like, that draw bees and other pollinators. These give way to small, round pomes, technically miniature apples, that ripen from white through blue-black. The fruits are sweet and edible, eaten raw off the branch or cooked down into jellies and jams, and the same hard little pomes that inspired the name bone apple hold on the plant well into the cooler months.

The fine foliage, dense twiggy frame, and tiny evergreen leaves make the bone apple a natural for close-range display. Grow the shrub as a low informal hedge, a specimen in a gravel or dry garden, or the front of a sunny border, and site where the ferny texture and pale flowers can be read up close, near a path, a patio, or a low wall. The species is also a long-favored subject for bonsai, since the miniature leaves and gnarled, arching stems reduce beautifully under training.

Drought tolerant once established and content on lean, sharply drained ground, the bone apple asks for full sun to part shade and little else. Pair the shrub with rosemary, lavender, small ornamental grasses, and other sun-and-drought lovers, and keep richer, wetter soil well away. At the cold edge of the range a large container makes the plant easy to shelter through hard freezes. A collector's shrub that earns a place for texture, fruit, and the quiet pleasure of growing something few gardeners know.

Fine texture for hot, dry ground. Use the bone apple as a low informal hedge, a specimen in a gravel or dry garden, or the front of a sunny border, where the ferny foliage and pale flowers can be read at close range. A long-favored bonsai subject as well, since the tiny leaves and gnarled stems reduce beautifully under training. Pair with rosemary, lavender, small ornamental grasses, and other sun-and-drought lovers on lean, sharply drained soil, and keep richer, wetter ground well away. Drought tolerant once established, and easy to hold in a container for winter shelter at the cold edge of the range.
