This scandent deciduous shrub with small leaves and fragrant small white flowers has long a favorite for Bonsai but is little known otherwise. Flower/Foliage

🌿 Foliage

Sageretia theezans features small, ovate to elliptic leaves that are finely toothed along the margins and typically range from 1 to 2 cm in length. The foliage is glossy and deep green, often emerging with a bronze tint when young. These evergreen leaves grow alternately along slender, often zigzagging stems, giving the plant a textured, fine-branched appearance ideal for bonsai. In warm climates, the foliage persists year-round, adding continuous ornamental value.

🌸 Flowers

In summer, Sageretia theezans produces tiny, inconspicuous greenish-white to yellowish flowers borne in axillary clusters or short terminal panicles. Though not particularly showy, the flowers have a delicate charm up close and emit a faint fragrance. Their modest appearance contrasts beautifully with the glossy leaves, and they serve an important ecological role by attracting pollinators.

🍒 Fruit

Following flowering, the plant develops small, round drupes—typically 4–6 mm in diameter—that ripen to a deep purple or black. These fruits resemble miniature plums, lending the species its common name. While not usually consumed by humans, the fruits are enjoyed by birds and other wildlife. On bonsai specimens, fruiting adds an extra layer of ornamental interest.

Sageretia theezans, commonly known as the Chinese Sweet Plum, is a subtropical evergreen shrub prized in bonsai cultivation for its small, glossy leaves, attractive bark, and delicate flowers. Native to southern China, it thrives in warm, humid environments and requires attentive care to flourish. Here's a comprehensive care guide to help you maintain a healthy and beautiful Sageretia theezans bonsai.

🌞 Light & Placement
Place outdoors in a semi-shaded area with bright, indirect light. Protect from intense midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.

  • Move indoors when temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F). Position near a south or west-facing window to maximize light exposure. If natural light is insufficient, consider using grow lights to supplement.
  • Maintain high humidity levels, especially indoors. Use a humidity tray filled with water and mist the foliage regularly with lime-free water to prevent leaf desiccation.

💧 Watering

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top 1–2 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Use soft, lime-free water to prevent mineral buildup, as Sageretia prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.
  • Regularly mist the leaves to maintain humidity and support healthy foliage, particularly during dry indoor conditions.

🌿 Fertilizing

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during spring and summer. Alternatively, use a solid organic fertilizer monthly.
  • If kept in a cool environment, reduce feeding to once a month. In warmer indoor settings, continue fertilizing every two weeks.

✂️ Pruning & Wiring

  • Trim new shoots back to two leaves throughout the year to encourage ramification and maintain shape. Avoid heavy pruning in late summer to allow for flowering and fruiting.
  • Wire young branches in spring when they are more flexible. Older branches are stiffer and may not respond well to wiring.
