Redwing (Heteropterys glabra) is a vining or scandent deciduous shrub with small lanceolate leaves and clusters of yellow flowers followed by red winged fruits that look just like maple "keys". It is not related to maple but is an interesting and uncommon plant for an arbor, fence or trellis in full sun or partial shade. This plant in the family Malpighiaceae is native to South America.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For best flowering and overall growth, plant Heteropterys glabra in a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent the leaves from scorching.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. This plant is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.0-7.0. Although it is tolerant of poor soils, adding organic matter such as compost can improve fertility and encourage more vigorous growth.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment period and the growing season. Once established, Heteropterys glabra is somewhat drought-tolerant but will perform best with regular watering during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging, as it can lead to root rot.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. Heteropterys glabra prefers warm, tropical to subtropical climates and does not tolerate frost well. In cooler regions, it can be grown in containers and brought indoors during the winter months. It can adapt to varying humidity levels but thrives in moderate to high humidity environments.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Additional fertilization during the growing season can help maintain vigor, especially if the plant is grown in containers. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers.

Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and helps maintain a neat appearance. After flowering, light trimming can encourage a second flush of blooms.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract pests like aphids or spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and garden hygiene can help maintain plant health.
