Lonicera x tellmanniana
1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 4-9
Bold, burnished orange trumpets in generous summer clusters make Lonicera × tellmanniana one of the most striking honeysuckle hybrids ever introduced. Combining the elegance of our native Lonicera sempervirens with the larger flower size of the Chinese Lonicera tragophylla, this historic vine offers vibrant color, strong growth, and refined foliage without the invasive tendencies associated with some honeysuckles.
The Story
This celebrated hybrid is believed to have originated in the 1920s at the Royal Hungarian Horticultural School in Budapest. It quickly gained international admiration for its exceptional floral display. The respected British authority Hillier described it succinctly in Manual of Trees and Shrubs as “a superb hybrid”—high praise in a conservative horticultural reference.
By combining an American native species with a Chinese parent, the hybrid achieves a rare balance: ornamental exuberance with garden reliability.
Providing support is essential—this is a true climber rather than a self-clinging vine.
Design Field Notes
- Ideal for pergolas, arbors, and large trellises
- Stunning when allowed to scramble through open-branched shrubs
- Pairs beautifully with blue or purple-flowering companions
- Effective in cottage, woodland-edge, or pollinator gardens
Its warm copper tones contrast beautifully against cool foliage and darker evergreens.
Why Grow It?
For gardeners seeking a non-invasive, high-impact flowering vine, Lonicera × tellmanniana offers history, horticultural pedigree, and unmistakable color. It stands as one of the great early 20th-century honeysuckle hybrids—still deserving of its reputation as “a superb hybrid.”
