Oleander is a large sun-loving evergreen Mediterranean shrub cultivated since ancient times. It has dark green leathery lance shaped leaves in whorls around the long sparingly branched stems. The fragrant flower clusters, in various colors, are showy and appear over much of the summer. Oleander is an excellent seacoast plant and often grown in containers in colder climates. It is poisonous but not likely to be ingested except by beach goers who choose Oleander sticks to cook weiners ! This plant is the relatively cold hardy form with rose pink flowers.

Light Requirements:

Nerium oleander "Hardy Pink" thrives in full sun, which encourages the best flowering and overall health. For optimal growth, provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. While it can tolerate partial shade, too little sunlight will reduce the number of blooms.

Soil:

This variety prefers well-draining soil, though it can tolerate a wide range of soil types, from sandy to loamy or even poor soils. It performs best in soil with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.5–7.5). Improve drainage in heavier soils by incorporating organic matter such as compost.

Watering:

Once established, Nerium oleander "Hardy Pink" is relatively drought-tolerant, but regular watering will support healthier growth and more flowers. Water deeply when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry. Be cautious not to overwater, as this plant is susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soil.

Temperature and Humidity:

Nerium oleander "Hardy Pink" is a cold-tolerant variety, hardy in USDA zones 7b–11, and can tolerate temperatures as low as 5°F (-15°C) for short periods. In areas with colder winters, it is best to grow the plant in a container that can be brought indoors, or protect the roots with mulch during frost periods.

Fertilization:

Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage lush foliage and an abundance of flowers. If desired, a second light feeding in mid-summer will help maintain growth and bloom production. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can lead to more foliage but fewer flowers.

Pruning:

Prune Nerium oleander "Hardy Pink" in late winter or early spring to shape the plant, remove dead or damaged branches, and encourage bushier growth. If desired, deadhead spent flowers during the blooming season to promote continued blooming. The plant can be pruned back heavily if needed, as it recovers quickly.

Propagation:

Nerium oleander "Hardy Pink" can be easily propagated through semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late spring or summer. Cuttings root well in water or directly in soil. Propagation from seed is possible but cuttings ensure the preservation of the pink flowering trait.

Pests and Diseases:

Although generally low-maintenance, Nerium oleander "Hardy Pink" may occasionally attract aphids, scale insects, or spider mites. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot, and be aware of oleander leaf scorch, a bacterial disease spread by insects, particularly in certain regions.

Toxicity:

All parts of the oleander plant, including the sap, are highly toxic to humans, pets, and livestock if ingested. Handle the plant with care when pruning, and keep children and pets away from the plant to prevent accidental poisoning.
