Will's Upright Yaupon Holly

Ilex vomitoria (male) "Will Fleming"

$23.00 Sold out

| Hardiness Zones 7-10

Yaupon Holly is a common evergreen shrub or small tree with small leaves and red berries on female plants. It is found from southeastern Virgina to Texas. It is a popular and adaptable ornamental and there are a number of named varieties including dwarf types. Yaupon provided the caffenated "black drink" of the coastal Indians and a coffee or tea subsititute for some inhabitants of the Virginia and Carolina coastal strip. This is a very unusual narrow upright form of this versatile evergreen. It was found in east Texas by Will Fleming. It forms an exclamation mark in the landscape and is hardy to 15'. Keep it tight by pruning any errant branches. This is a great fastigiate male clone that is a good plant for a narrow space.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages dense growth, but it can tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil and is adaptable to various soil types including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).

Watering: Requires regular watering during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage strong root growth.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. Tolerates a wide range of temperatures and performs well in both humid and dry conditions. Protect young plants from extreme cold in their first few years.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An annual application of compost can enhance soil fertility and structure.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Light pruning helps encourage bushier growth and better air circulation. "Will Fleming" is known for its narrow, columnar growth habit, so minimal pruning is typically required to maintain its shape.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-free but can occasionally attract scale insects and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for use as a narrow hedge, privacy screen, or vertical accent in landscapes. Its attractive, glossy green foliage adds year-round interest, and its columnar form is perfect for tight spaces and formal garden designs.
