Northern Maidenhair
Adiantum pedatum
| Hardiness Zones 3-8
In the soft hush of shaded woods, Adiantum pedatum emerges like a delicate masterpiece: slender, glossy black stems hold lacy green fronds in perfect semi-circles or “horseshoes,” much like a hand-turned fan. Standing 12–30 inches tall, it forms serene clumps that spread slowly by creeping rhizomes—never a rush, always a grace. In early spring, its fiddleheads appear a rosy to burgundy hue, slowly unfurling into finely divided, bird‑foot pinnate leaves that whisper of woodland serenity.
A true northern maidenhair, it’s the hardiest in its genus—thriving in USDA Zones 3–8 where others falter . It flourishes in part to full shade, in cool, humus-rich, moist (but well-drained) soil, and prefers consistent moisture to showcase its fine texture. While summer heat and drought can brown its delicate fronds, shaded and sheltered spots reward it with season-long elegance. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, it makes a refined companion for hostas, trilliums, and woodland grasses.
