There is a strange romance buried in this plant's history, and 'Golden King' sits on the male side of it. Aucuba japonica reached England in 1783 as a single female, the yellow-flecked gold dust shrub that Victorians went on to plant by the thousand. Aucuba carry their sexes on separate plants, and for eighty years every aucuba in the country was a clone of that one female, waiting on the famous red berries that never came, because Japan had sealed its borders and no male could be had.

Only when Robert Fortune reached the newly opened country around 1861 and sent a male home did the first berried plant appear, a sensation when shown in London in 1864. Someone later wrote a whole book about the saga and called it A Virgin for Eighty Years.

'Golden King' is a male clone, and a generous one. They set no berries themselves, being the wrong sex for it, but they are exactly what you plant beside a female aucuba to draw hers into color, all the while wearing some of the boldest variegation in the genus: large, leathery, glossy leaves splashed and marbled in gold, often more gold than green, no two quite alike. They came to us through Michael Dirr's evaluations of the best forms. Give them the hard places, dry shade under trees, a sooty city corner, the spot where nothing else will brighten, and they will hold their light there straight through winter. The old Japanese name for them, aoki, means blue tree, from a time when one word still covered blue and green both.

Design Notes

A bold variegated evergreen for the hard places: dry shade under trees, a sooty city corner, a north foundation, any dim spot where nothing else will brighten. 'Golden King' holds gold-marbled leaves through winter and, as a male clone, pollinates nearby female aucubas to draw out their red berries. Pair with dark-leaved shade plants that set off the gold.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Small purple-maroon male flowers in spring; no berries, pollinates female aucubas

Foliage
The reason to grow them. Large, leathery, glossy evergreen leaves, elliptic and pointed, four to eight inches long, splashed and marbled in bright gold over deep green, often carrying more gold than green and no two patterned alike. The color holds through the darkest months and lifts a shaded corner that would otherwise read as a hole in the garden.

Flowers
Small and quietly purple-maroon, four-petaled, held in upright branching panicles in early spring. Individually they are nothing to look at, but they are male and loaded with pollen, which is the entire job: this is the plant that brings your female aucubas into fruit.

Fruit
None. As a male clone they set no berries of their own; what they do is coax the scarlet drupes from the females nearby, the very berries that made the species a Victorian sensation.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Part to deep shade; protect from hot direct sun, which scorches and bleaches the leaves.

Soil. Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter; tolerant of poor, dry ground.

Water. Water to establish; notably tolerant of dry shade once settled.

Pruning. Prune lightly in spring to shape; remove any all-green reverting shoots to keep the variegation.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 10.
