The United States National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. sits on 446 acres of rolling ground above the Anacostia River — a place where serious horticultural work has been done quietly and without fanfare for the better part of a century. It is from this institution, and from the river that borders it, that Camellia japonica 'Anacostia' takes its name. Selected at the Arboretum for cold hardiness and reliable performance at the northern edge of camellia country, it carries the institutional weight of that origin into every garden it enters.

Camellias arrived in the Western world in the eighteenth century, carried from China and Japan by plant hunters who recognized immediately that they were looking at something extraordinary. In Asia they had been cultivated for well over a thousand years — as ornamental plants, as sources of tea and camellia oil, as subjects of poetry and painting and sustained botanical attention. By the time they reached the gardens of Europe and the American South, they had already been refined into thousands of named forms. 'Anacostia' represents a specifically American chapter of that long story: a selection made not for the mild winters of Kyushu or the Azores but for the colder, more demanding conditions of the mid-Atlantic and upper South.

The flowers are deep red, formal to semi-formal in form, with the dense, layered petal arrangement that makes a well-grown camellia look almost architectural in the winter garden. They appear from late winter into early spring, at the precise moment when the garden is most in need of them. The foliage — dark, glossy, and evergreen — earns its place through the rest of the year without asking for attention. This is a plant that has been refined over centuries to do exactly what it does. It shows.

Flower, Fruit and Foliage

The 'Anacostia' camellia produces large, semi-double to peony-form flowers that are a rich, vibrant red. The blooms are typically 4 to 5 inches in diameter, showcasing a beautiful contrast against the glossy, dark green foliage. The flowering period is from late winter to early spring, adding a splash of color during the cooler months.

Flowers
Deep red, formal to semi-formal double form, 3 to 4 inches across, with dense, symmetrically arranged petals. Blooms late winter to early spring, typically February through April depending on climate and season. Flowers are long-lasting on the plant and hold their color well in cool temperatures. Not fragrant. Selected at the US National Arboretum for cold hardiness and reliable performance in zone 7 conditions.

Foliage
Leaves are elliptic to ovate, 3 to 4 inches long, with a finely serrated margin and a deep, high-gloss dark green upper surface. Dense and evergreen year-round; provides strong structural presence in the winter garden. New growth emerges with a slightly bronzed tone before maturing to deep green.

Sun
Part shade to full shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal — this mimics the plant's natural forest-edge habitat and protects flowers from freeze-thaw damage in colder climates. Avoid hot afternoon sun, which scorches foliage and shortens flower longevity.

Soil
Moist, well-drained, and strongly acidic — pH 5.5 to 6.5 is ideal. Amend with pine bark, leaf mold, or acidic compost if necessary. Do not plant in alkaline soils; chlorosis will follow. Excellent drainage is essential — camellias tolerate neither waterlogging nor extended drought.

Watering
Consistent moisture is critical, particularly during the first two growing seasons and through summer dry spells. Mulch heavily around the root zone to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Never allow to dry out completely; equally, never allow to sit in standing water.

Fertilizing
Feed with an acidic, slow-release fertilizer formulated for camellias or azaleas in early spring, after flowering. Do not fertilize after midsummer — late-season growth is vulnerable to frost damage. Avoid over-fertilizing, which promotes excessive growth at the expense of flowering.

Pruning
Prune immediately after flowering, before next season's buds set. Remove crossing branches, thin crowded growth for air circulation, and shape as desired. Camellias respond well to hard pruning if rejuvenation is needed, though this sacrifices one season's bloom.

Pests & Problems
Camellia petal blight (Ciborinia camelliae) is the most common issue — a fungal disease that browns flowers rapidly in wet spring weather. Remove and dispose of affected flowers promptly; do not compost. Scale insects may appear on established plants; treat with horticultural oil in late winter before growth begins. Tea scale is the most common species; look for white or brown encrustations on the undersides of leaves.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
