Greensboro Red Camellia
Camellia japonica 'Greensboro Red'
| Hardiness Zones 7-9
If you’ve ever wondered what a camellia can become when it’s truly happy for decades, meet our old friend: ‘Greensboro Red.’ At the original Woodlanders nursery site, this cultivar has formed an incredible ~15-foot-tall hedgerow over more than 30 years—a living reminder that camellias aren’t just “shrubs,” they’re legacy plants. Robert Mackintosh originally planted a hedgerow in the early 1970's, originally acquired from small, local nursery here in Aiken, SC.
In late winter into early spring, ‘Greensboro Red’ lights up the garden with large, red to rose-red blooms—often semi-double, sometimes edging toward double form—with a bold boss of golden stamens for contrast. The glossy, deep-green evergreen foliage keeps the structure handsome year-round, whether you grow it as a specimen, a screen, or a flowering hedge.
Why you’ll love it
-
Signature winter color: big red blooms when the rest of the garden is still waking up
-
Made for hedges & screens: dense, upright growth that matures into a substantial evergreen wall
-
Classic cut-flower moment: blooms are beautiful clipped for indoor bowls and vases (the winter equivalent of peonies)
