'Imura' is a refined white form of Camellia japonica, grown for elegant semi-double pure white flowers set against narrow, glossy evergreen leaves. The clean white bloom and slightly fine-textured foliage give the plant a quiet, luminous presence in shade, a contrast to the heavier reds and pinks that dominate the genus.

The flowers open in late winter, when the cool-season garden most wants light, the white petals loose and semi-double around a center of soft yellow stamens. Like most camellias, 'Imura' is at finest in semi-shade, in sandy, slightly acidic soil kept mulched and watered, where the upright evergreen frame holds the year and the flowers read with particular clarity against a dark background.

Design Notes

Use 'Imura' where a clean white flower will light a shaded planting: a woodland border, a north or east-facing foundation, or a spot framed for winter from a window or path. The pale bloom reads best against a dark backdrop, so site near broadleaf evergreens or a shaded wall, and underplant with ferns, hellebores, and early bulbs. The narrow, glossy foliage and upright habit make a tidy evergreen presence the rest of the year. Grow as a specimen or an informal screen in semi-shade.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Semi-double white, late winter to early spring

Flower. Pure white, semi-double, the petals loose and slightly tubular around a soft yellow center, opening in late winter and early spring. A clean, luminous white that lights a shaded planting.

Foliage. Narrow, glossy, dark green evergreen leaves give a finer texture than most japonicas, a tidy upright frame the year round.

Care

Light. Part shade to dappled sun; shelter from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and brown the white blooms.

Soil. Sandy, well-drained, acidic soil around pH 5.5 to 6.5, rich in organic matter and kept mulched.

Water. Steady moisture through the growing season, deep but never waterlogged; ease off in winter.

Pruning. Prune just after flowering; remove dead or crossing wood and thin lightly for air.

Hardiness. Reliable through USDA Zones 7 to 9; shelter from hard winter wind and frost at the northern edge.
