Native Pollinator Very Rare Woodlanders Introduction

Yellow Trumpet Creeper 'Judy'

Campsis radicans 'Judy'

$30.00 Sold out
USDA Zones 5–9 Full Sun and Part Shade Matures 20–30 Feet

We found the original plant in eastern North Carolina. Campsis radicans 'Judy' trades the usual orange for a clear soft yellow with a dark throat, and the hummingbirds do not care about the color one way or the other.

A yellow-flowered, floriferous selection of a vine that normally comes orange. 'Judy' climbs high and fast on aerial rootlets, carrying compound deciduous leaves of glossy toothed leaflets, and from midsummer onward produces terminal clusters of trumpets in a clear soft yellow with a darker throat. The flowers are three inches long and shaped precisely for a hummingbird's bill, which is not a coincidence and not lost on the birds; a trumpet creeper in full flower is the busiest thing in a southern garden in July. Bloom continues in waves until frost.

This is a Woodlanders introduction, and one we are fond of. We found the original plant in eastern North Carolina. The well-known yellow-flowered 'Flava' is presumably of more northern provenance, and side by side the two are worth comparing: 'Judy' is the warmer, softer yellow, with the dark throat that 'Flava' lacks. Campsis comes from the Greek kampsis, a bending, for the curved stamens inside the trumpet, and radicans means rooting, describing the aerial rootlets that fasten the stems to whatever they climb. The species is native across the eastern United States, and in the wild you meet it at woodland edges, fence lines, and old field margins, usually thirty feet up a dead pine.

Which brings up the one thing every buyer should understand before planting. Campsis radicans is vigorous, and vigorous here means suckering, self-layering, and capable of prying at siding and gutters with those rootlets. Grown against a house wall it is a maintenance commitment. Grown on a stout free-standing post, arbor, pergola, fence, or a dead tree in a field, it is one of the great American garden plants and almost no work at all. Give it something that can take the weight, keep it off the building, and cut suckers as they appear.

Full sun for the heaviest flowering, and ordinary soil; rich ground and generous water produce leaves at the expense of flowers, so lean and dry is genuinely better here. Prune hard in late winter, back to a permanent framework, since flowers come on new wood and an unpruned plant becomes a top-heavy tangle that blooms out of sight. Hardy through zone 5, far colder than most people expect of something that looks tropical in bloom. Pair with Lonicera sempervirens, Bignonia capreolata, and late salvias for a hummingbird planting that runs from spring to frost.

Design Notes

Understand the vigor before you plant. Campsis radicans suckers, self-layers, and grips with aerial rootlets that will work at siding, mortar, and gutters. Against a house wall this is a standing maintenance job.

Give it instead a stout free-standing structure that can carry real weight: a heavy post, an arbor, a pergola, a split-rail fence, or a dead tree in a field. On those it is one of the great American garden plants and asks almost nothing. Cut suckers as they appear.

Lean, dry, sunny ground gives the best flowering; rich soil and steady water produce foliage instead. Pair with Lonicera sempervirens, Bignonia capreolata, Aesculus pavia, and late salvias for a hummingbird planting that runs spring to frost.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

clear yellow trumpets with a darker throat, three inches long, midsummer until frost

Flower. Terminal clusters of clear soft yellow trumpets about three inches long, each with a darker throat, from midsummer in repeated waves until frost. Shaped for hummingbirds and worked constantly by them.

Fruit. Long slender bean-like capsules four to six inches long, drying and splitting to release papery winged seed. Ornamentally minor and a useful source of volunteers if you want more.

Foliage. Compound deciduous leaves of seven to eleven glossy toothed leaflets, clean dark green through the season. Stems climb by aerial rootlets that grip almost any surface.

Care

Light. Full sun for heavy flowering. Part shade is tolerated and costs you bloom.

Soil. Ordinary and well-drained. Deliberately do not enrich; lean ground flowers far better than fertile ground.

Water. Water to establish, then leave alone. Drought tolerant once settled, and over-watering pushes growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning. Essential and hard. Cut back to a permanent framework every late winter, since flowers come on new wood. An unpruned plant turns into a top-heavy tangle that blooms where you cannot see it. Remove suckers through the season.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 9, considerably colder than the tropical-looking flowers suggest.
