Camptosema praeandinum
| Hardiness Zones 8-10
We collected this one in the pre-Andean foothills of northwest Argentina, which is exactly what its name says: praeandinum, before the Andes. It grows wild there between three and five thousand feet, in country that bakes by day and chills hard at night, and that upbringing shows. The plant shrugs off heat that flattens lesser things and still comes back through a Zone 8 winter.
Habit is its own conversation. Call it a shrub that never quite committed to standing on its own, or a vine that forgot to fully climb. Give it something to lean on and it will scramble four to six feet, clothed in soft trifoliate leaves that look borrowed from a green bean. The payoff is the bloom: long racemes of coral orange flowers rising straight out of the leaf axils, the kind of color that reads from across the garden.
Arturo Burkart named it in 1970, and the botanists have since shuffled it toward a new genus, Cerradicola, though it will answer to either at the nursery. Our friends at Yucca Do grew it first in Texas and called it tough enough for the worst of their summers. We believe them.
Full sun, sharp drainage, a trellis or a strong-shouldered neighbor to climb. Little else asked, much given.
