Chamaerops humilis, the European Fan Palm, is the one palm native to Europe, growing wild on dry hillsides across the western Mediterranean and into North Africa. Deeply divided fan leaves sit on spine-edged stalks, and the palm usually builds a cluster of several trunks rather than one, slowly, into a neat mound that in great age may top fifteen feet. A tough, adaptable, relatively cold-hardy palm that takes a range of sites in stride.

Our plants came from our friend Joe LeVert of Augusta, Georgia, a longtime palm grower whose seed turns up behind more than one Woodlanders listing. Among them were plants of the taller form 'Arborescens' and the dwarf 'Vulcano', so the seedlings varied, which is half the fun of a seed strain. A reference listing for a palm we have grown and offered.
