In the dead of winter, when the garden has given up on color and scent alike, Chimonanthus praecox quietly does the impossible. On bare, leafless branches, often in January and February, the wintersweet opens small, waxy, cupped stars of translucent pale yellow, each flushed at the heart with maroon, and from them pours a fragrance so rich and far-carrying that a single sprig will perfume a room. The Chinese name, la mei, the wax plum, catches the look of the petals exactly.

A deciduous shrub of the Chinese mountains, wintersweet has been cherished in Chinese gardens for well over a thousand years, planted by doorways and courtyards for the midwinter perfume and gathered for the new-year house. The flowers earn their keep beyond the garden as well: in Chinese tradition the buds, known as la mei hua, are floated in tea, used to scent and flavor, and hold a long place in folk medicine, recorded in herbals as early as the fifteenth century for easing summer-heat, slaking thirst, and quieting a cough. The South has prized the shrub for generations for that same unreasonable winter fragrance.

In the garden, forgive wintersweet a somewhat gawky, upright habit and plant for the nose. Site the shrub where a winter path, a door, or a gate brings people within reach of the scent on a mild afternoon, and where summer's plain green frame can recede behind showier neighbors. Cut branches in tight bud and bring them indoors, where they open in the warmth and fill a house with perfume. Plant toward the back of a border, give room, and let later, bolder plants carry the warm months while the wintersweet waits for the cold.

Design Notes

Grown for one extraordinary gift, midwinter fragrance, and best placed accordingly. Site wintersweet beside a winter-used path, a door, or a gate, where the scent can be caught on a mild day, and toward the back of a border where summer's unremarkable green can hide behind showier neighbors. The upright, somewhat gawky frame suits an informal or woodland-edge planting; cut branches in bud for the house, where they open and perfume a whole room. Give full sun to part shade and room to reach full size.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Transparent yellow, very fragrant, January-February

Flower. The whole reason to grow the shrub. In the depths of winter, small, waxy, cupped stars of translucent pale yellow stained maroon at the center open along bare branches, carrying a powerful, sweet, far-reaching perfume on mild afternoons.

Fruit. Curious woody, urn-shaped seed receptacles follow, ripening tan and persisting on the branches; the seeds within are toxic and not to be eaten.

Foliage. Lance-shaped, pointed, rough-textured dark green leaves clothe the shrub through the growing season, plain but healthy, turning soft yellow before falling to reveal the flowering wood.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Full sun to part shade; the heaviest flowering comes with good sun, though light shade is tolerated.

Soil. Fertile, well-drained ground; wintersweet is adaptable but resents constantly wet soil.

Water. Water through establishment and in summer drought; once settled the shrub is fairly drought tolerant.

Pruning. Prune right after flowering, since the flowers form on the previous year's wood; thin out old or crossing stems to lift the naturally dense, twiggy frame.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 9.

History & tradition

Wintersweet holds a long place in Chinese tradition that reaches beyond the garden. The fragrant flowers and buds, known as la mei hua, have been floated in tea and used in folk remedies for well over five hundred years, recorded in herbals from the early fifteenth century onward for relieving summer-heat, slaking thirst, and easing coughs and colds. The plant is also valued as a scented edible flower. Modern laboratory studies, mostly in China, have begun to examine antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in flower extracts, though this work is early and preclinical. The seeds and other parts contain toxic alkaloids and should never be eaten. This note is shared as cultural and horticultural history only, and is not medical advice.
