Black Elephant Ear

Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic'

$24.00 Sold out

| Hardiness Zones 7-10

Among the most bewitching sights in the summer garden, Colocasia esculenta ‘Black Magic’ rises like a gothic dream from the soil—its velvety, purple-black leaves casting deep shade and deeper admiration. Sometimes called the Jet Black Wonder, this dramatic taro cultivar has become a garden sensation across the South, beloved for its bold color and architectural form.

With rich, moist soil and generous watering, Black Magic can reach a towering 5 to 6 feet, its leaves unfurling like silk flags in the humid breeze. It thrives in the Southern heat—those long, sultry months from May through September—and brings a tropical elegance to pondsides, borders, or bold container plantings. Few plants make such a powerful visual statement.

Native to tropical Asia, Colocasia esculenta has long been cultivated for both beauty and utility. But in this dark-leaved cultivar, nature outdid herself. As summer fades and frost finally claims the top growth, cut it back cleanly and mulch well for winter protection. Come spring, lift that blanket and welcome a new flush of shoots as the earth warms.

If you want a garden conversation piece—or a living poem in the landscape—look no further. Colocasia esculenta ‘Black Magic’ is not just a plant; it is a presence.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light:

Prefers full sun to partial shade. In the hottest Southern zones, a bit of afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch, though the plant tolerates strong sun if kept moist.

Soil:

Thrives in rich, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Ideal in consistently moist or even boggy conditions, but will tolerate regular garden soil if watered frequently. A layer of compost at planting will set it up for vigorous growth.

Water:

This is a water-loving plant. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. ‘Black Magic’ does exceptionally well near ponds, in rain gardens, or in containers with no drainage hole (as a water garden feature).

Fertilizer:

Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer or side-dress with compost or a slow-release granular fertilizer. Heavy feeding encourages lush foliage and strong upright growth.

Temperature & Hardiness:

Hardy in USDA Zones 7b–11. In colder climates, tubers can be lifted and stored indoors through winter. In Zone 7b and up, plants usually die back after frost but return reliably with a thick winter mulch for protection.

Maintenance:

  • dead foliage after the first frost.

  • thick mulch layer (2–4 inches) in fall for winter insulation.

Pests & Problems:

Generally pest-free, though slugs and spider mites may occasionally appear. Watch for root rot in poorly drained soil.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
