Loquat

Eriobotrya japonica

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-10

The Loquat is a large evergreen shrub with big leathery leaves that are toothed on the margins. The plant flowers in mid-winter with clusters of white flowers. The edible plum-like fruits are variable in size and quality and contain large brown seeds. Fruit production depends on winter temperatures at and after flowering. Very cold temperatures prevent fruiting. In much of the South fruit production can vary from year to year. The Loquat needs space and given good soil and adequate drainage will make a large and attractive shrub.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and fruit production, ensure the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer flowers and fruit in lower light conditions.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Loquat trees are adaptable to a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and even clay soils, provided they are well-draining. Incorporating organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure can improve soil fertility and structure.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep, infrequent watering is preferable to shallow, frequent watering to encourage deep root growth. Once established, the loquat tree can tolerate short periods of drought but will perform best with consistent moisture.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. Prefers warm temperatures and is tolerant of a wide range of humidity levels. Loquat trees are sensitive to frost, particularly when young or during the flowering and fruiting periods. In colder regions, provide protection from frost or consider growing the tree in a container that can be moved indoors during the winter.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer to support healthy growth and fruit production. An additional application of compost or organic mulch can help maintain soil fertility. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree. Pruning helps maintain a manageable size, improves air circulation, and encourages better fruit production. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce the number of flowers and fruit.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract pests such as aphids, scale insects, and fruit flies. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like fire blight and powdery mildew. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the tree for any signs of disease or pest infestation.
