Brahea armata, the Mexican Blue Palm, was listed for years under the older name Erythea armata, and the Woodlanders catalog carried both. The palm comes from the dry canyons of Baja California and is one of the bluest things in the palm world, a crown of stiff, powdery, silver-blue fans on a heavy trunk, and in summer long arching flower sprays that reach out and down well past the leaves. Slow to establish and slow after that, but a desert palm of real presence, planted widely in California and Arizona.
Woodlanders grew the Mexican Blue Palm for gardeners in the Southeast willing to give an open, airy spot in full sun with sharp drainage, which is the whole secret with this palm in a humid climate. A reference listing for a plant we have offered.
inflorescences: to 15 foot long. arched with pendulous branches. flowers in clusters of 3.
