Few fruits carry the weight of centuries quite like the common fig. Ficus carica, native to the sun-soaked hills of the Mediterranean and Middle East, has graced gardens and tables since biblical times. But in the American South, no variety is more beloved than the Celeste fig—often called the “Sugar Fig” for its intensely sweet, honeyed flavor.

This particular lineage of Ficus carica ‘Celeste’ comes to us through a story as rich as the fruit itself. The mother plant, long-rooted in Many, Louisiana, was passed down through generations before making its way to east Texas. There, Gail Ebner—wife of Aiken City Councilman Reggie Ebner—took cuttings from the family fig and brought them east to South Carolina. From those cherished cuttings come the plants we now offer, grown right here in Aiken soil.

‘Celeste’ is a hardy, self-pollinating, deciduous fig that produces abundant small to medium fruit—light brown to purplish in color with a closed eye, which helps resist spoilage from insects and rain. The fruit ripens in mid-summer and is prized for fresh eating, preserves, or simply plucked warm from the branch and enjoyed under the sky that ripened it.

This fig thrives in USDA Zones 7–10 and asks little beyond full sun, fertile, well-drained soil, and a bit of patience. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, resilient to heat, and generous with its gifts. Even its broad, lobed leaves lend a touch of ancient grace to the Southern landscape.

What we offer is more than a plant—it’s a living heirloom, rooted in Southern heritage, bearing fruit from a time when home and land were measured not just in acres, but in stories passed down and branches well-tended.

Flower/Foliage

Fruit:

The fruit of Ficus carica ‘Celeste’ is a small to medium fig, round to pear-shaped, with smooth, light brown to violet-purple skin that takes on a dusky blush as it ripens in the heat of summer. Its closed eye (the small opening at the fruit’s apex) makes it naturally resistant to souring and insect intrusion—an ideal trait for humid Southern climates. Within, the flesh is a rich rose-pink, dense with sweetness and subtle floral notes. Often referred to as the "Sugar Fig," its honeyed flavor needs no embellishment. The fruit ripens early to mid-summer, making it one of the first figs to bless the Southern table each season.

Flowers:

Like all figs, the flowers of ‘Celeste’ are hidden—internal, inconspicuous, and pollinated without fanfare. They bloom within the fruit structure itself, never revealing their petals to the open air. Though unseen, their quiet work brings forth one of the South’s most treasured fruits.

Foliage:

The foliage is grand in form and generous in shade. Each leaf is deeply lobed, typically with three to five broad fingers, and can grow up to 10 inches across. The color is a deep, verdant green, lending a tropical air to the garden from late spring through frost. Slightly rough to the touch, the leaves emit a distinctive, earthy scent when brushed—a subtle reminder of the fig’s ancient lineage. In autumn, the leaves turn golden yellow before falling, revealing the plant’s elegant branching structure.
