Swamp Privet
Forestiera acuminata
Pickup currently unavailable at Aiken Nursery
Swamp privet, Forestiera acuminata, is a native deciduous shrub or small tree of the wet South, at home in the flood-prone bottoms and streambanks from Texas east to South Carolina and up the Mississippi Valley as far as Illinois and Indiana. A member of the olive family, Oleaceae, and a distant cousin of the true privets, the plant shrugs off standing water and seasonal flooding with an ease few woody plants can match.
Late winter and early spring bring the first sign of life: small greenish-yellow flowers clustered along the bare twigs before the leaves unfold, quiet but welcome when little else has stirred. Swamp privet is dioecious, carrying male and female flowers on separate plants, so a female needs a male nearby to set the crop of fruit that follows.
On the female plants, dark purple to black, oblong drupes ripen through summer and are stripped quickly by wildlife. Ducks are especially fond of the fruit, and the shrub is counted among the better woody plants for waterfowl and songbirds in wet ground, one of those unshowy natives that quietly feeds a whole marsh.
In the garden the value is ecological and structural rather than ornamental. Use swamp privet along a pond edge, a stream bank, a rain garden, or the wet margin of a naturalized planting, where the flood tolerance and wildlife draw earn a place that tidier shrubs cannot fill. Give sun to part shade and moist to wet ground, plant a male alongside the females for fruit, and let the shrub knit into the damp, wild edges of a Southern landscape.
