Franklinia
Franklinia alatamaha
| Hardiness Zones 5-8
Collected from the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia by John and William Bartram in the 1760s, it was last seen growing wild sometime around 1803 and has not been found in nature since. Every Franklinia alive today, in every garden and arboretum on earth, descends from what the Bartrams brought back. You are, quite literally, holding a piece of that lineage.
The tree itself is worth growing on its own merits, history aside. White, camellia-like flowers with a boss of golden stamens open in late summer and into fall, often while the foliage is already turning a deep, burnished crimson...the two happening simultaneously, which feels almost too generous. It wants a well-drained, acidic soil, a bit of afternoon shade in the hottest climates, and an owner who understands that some plants reward patience rather than neglect.
We've grown Franklinia at Woodlanders for decades. It never stops feeling like a privilege.
