This Gardenia is a large shrub essentially like the common Gardenia with glossy evergreen leaves and very fragrant white flowers but the flowers on this one soon change to deep yellow. We obtained this plant from a garden in central South Carolina but it was said to have come originally from Armstrong Nurseries in CA.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and flowering, provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from leaf scorch and stress.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, acidic soil. The ideal pH range is 5.0-6.0. Gardenias prefer soil rich in organic matter, such as compost or peat moss. If your soil tends to be heavy or clay-like, amending it with organic material will improve drainage and help maintain the necessary acidity.

Watering: Requires consistent moisture to thrive. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply to ensure that the roots receive adequate moisture. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot, and ensure good drainage.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11. Gardenia jasminoides 'Yellow' prefers warm, humid conditions and is sensitive to cold temperatures. Protect the plant from temperatures below 40°F (4°C). If grown indoors, increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or placing a humidity tray nearby.

Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again in mid-summer. An additional application of micronutrients, such as iron, can help maintain healthy foliage, especially if yellowing leaves are noticed. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can cause nutrient imbalances.

Pruning: Prune lightly after the blooming period to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches. Pruning helps maintain a compact form and encourages bushier growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as Gardenias bloom on old wood, and excessive pruning can reduce flower production for the next season.

Pests and Problems: Gardenia jasminoides 'Yellow' can be susceptible to pests such as aphids, scale, and spider mites, as well as fungal issues like sooty mold. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal problems. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly check for signs of stress or disease to manage problems early.
