Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite' is winterberry shrunk to garden size and cranked up in intensity. Where much of the landscape fades to gray, this compact native holly turns into a beacon, the bare stems packed with heavy clusters of large, glossy scarlet berries that color in fall and cling deep into winter, a living ember at the pond's edge or against fresh snow.
Barely three to five feet tall and about as wide, dense and neatly rounded, 'Red Sprite' is the smallest of the well-known winterberries, sometimes sold under the older names 'Compacta' or 'Nana'. That restraint is the whole appeal: the plant delivers the full winterberry fireworks on a frame that fits a small garden, a foundation planting, or the front of a wet border, where a six-foot clone would overwhelm.
Winterberry is a deciduous holly of eastern North American wetlands, a shrub of swamp edges, pond margins, and wet woodland from Canada to the Gulf, and the finely toothed, spineless leaves look nothing like a Christmas holly until the flowers appear. Only female plants fruit, and only with a male blooming at the same time nearby. 'Red Sprite' flowers early, so an early male such as 'Jim Dandy' is the standard partner, and the long-blooming 'Raritan Chief' will serve as well, set within about fifty feet.
Give 'Red Sprite' the moist to wet, acidic soil the species loves, in full sun to part shade, and the little shrub will earn a place three seasons out of four and steal the show in the fourth. Robins, cedar waxwings, and mockingbirds strip the berries through late winter, so a planting feeds birds when the landscape is otherwise lean. A few cut stems bring the same red glow indoors for the holidays. Abundance, as this small holly proves, need not be large to matter.
