Winterberry Holly 'Southern Gentleman'

Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman'

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-9

Every winterberry covered in red is hiding a secret, and his name is 'Southern Gentleman'. Winterberry hollies are dioecious, male and female on separate plants, and only the pollinated females set the blazing red fruit the species is grown for. No male nearby, no berries. 'Southern Gentleman' is the male who makes the show possible, and asks for none of the credit.

His particular gift is timing. Winterberries only fruit when a male blooms in step with the female he's meant to pollinate, and the southern, late-blooming clones, 'Winter Red' chief among them, need a male who flowers late to match. 'Southern Gentleman' is exactly that. He carries the pollen for 'Winter Red', 'Winter Gold', 'Sparkleberry', 'Sunset', and the rest of the late crowd, and he's generous about it: a single plant will service six to ten females within bee range, roughly fifty feet, so one gentleman keeps a whole hedge in fruit. He came out of the nursery of Bob Simpson in Vincennes, Indiana, who first listed him under the unglamorous working name 'Late Male' before the better one stuck.

Don't write him off as merely useful. He makes a vigorous, upright, rounded shrub of glossy dark green that turns soft yellow-green and bronze-purple in fall, and his small spring flowers hum with native bees doing the work he's there for. He'll grow in the same wet feet the species loves, full sun to part shade, untroubled by clay or standing water as long as the soil stays acid. Native to the eastern wetlands, Ilex verticillata is one of our finest winter plants, and this is the one you plant so all the others can shine. Buy him for what he does, not for what he shows, and the red will follow.

Flower, Fruit and Foliage

Greenish-white, late spring

Flowers:
The flowers are small, greenish-white, and easy to miss, clustered tight in the leaf axils along the stems in late spring. On 'Southern Gentleman' they are the entire purpose of the plant: these are the male flowers whose pollen, carried off by small native bees and flies, fertilizes the female winterberries nearby and sets their fruit. He blooms late, deliberately so, to overlap with the late-flowering southern clones like 'Winter Red'. Modest to look at, indispensable in function. The bees, at least, give him the attention he's due.

Fruit:
None, and that's by design. 'Southern Gentleman' is a male plant and sets no berries himself; every scarlet fruit he's responsible for hangs on the female plants around him. If you want the bare red stems that make winterberry famous in December, this is the plant that causes them, not the one that wears them. Think of his fruit as borrowed, scattered across the hedge in someone else's name.

Foliage:
Better than a pollinator strictly needs to be. The summer foliage is glossy and dark green, clean and untroubled through the season on a vigorous, upright, rounded frame. In fall the leaves shift through yellow-green to a quiet bronze-purple before dropping, a low-key autumn turn rather than a bonfire. Then the leaves fall and he stands bare and unremarkable through winter, while the females he pollinated blaze with the fruit he made possible. A supporting role, played well.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. "Southern Gentleman" thrives in full sunlight, which promotes the healthiest growth and ensures that it can effectively pollinate nearby female winterberries. It can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates, but full sun is ideal for maximizing its role in the garden.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This plant grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 4.5-6.5. "Southern Gentleman" is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-draining and retain moisture. Incorporating organic matter such as compost or peat moss into the soil improves its structure and fertility, enhancing overall plant health.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Ilex verticillata prefers consistently moist soil, particularly during the growing season. While it can tolerate wet soils, it should not be left in waterlogged conditions for extended periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool, which is beneficial during hot, dry spells.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 3-9. "Southern Gentleman" is well-suited to a wide range of climates and is especially valuable in colder regions due to its winter hardiness. It can withstand cold winters and frost, making it an excellent choice for colder climates. The plant prefers moderate humidity levels but can adapt to various humidity conditions.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its active growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and promoting overall plant health.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since "Southern Gentleman" is a male plant and does not produce berries, pruning can be more extensive if needed to control its size or shape. Regular pruning helps maintain a dense, attractive form and encourages healthy new growth.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by common garden pests like aphids or scale insects. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant can help prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and proper garden hygiene are essential for maintaining plant health.

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.
