Velvety, star-shaped blooms in deep wine-red seem to hover against glossy evergreen foliage—‘Halley’s Comet’ Florida Anise is one of the richest flowering native shrubs for the shade garden. Compact yet vigorous, aromatic yet refined, it brings Southern woodland drama without demanding conditions.

The Plant

Illicium floridanum is native to the central Gulf Coast region, occurring naturally from southern Georgia across Florida’s Panhandle to coastal Alabama and Louisiana. In the wild, it grows along shaded streambanks, seepage slopes, and moist woodland margins where soils are rich in organic matter and consistently damp but well drained.

The species forms a medium-sized evergreen shrub, typically 6–10 feet tall in ideal conditions. ‘Halley’s Comet’ refines that habit—vigorous but more compact, with dense branching and particularly dark green foliage that sets off the flowers dramatically.

Leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, 3–6 inches long, leathery, and glossy. When crushed, they release a distinct spicy, anise-like fragrance—pleasant and characteristic of the genus (though not edible like culinary star anise).

Growing Conditions

Though naturally associated with streambanks, Illicium floridanum proves adaptable in cultivation as long as soils do not become excessively dry. Mulching helps conserve moisture and mimic woodland conditions.

Selection & History

‘Halley’s Comet’ was selected by plantsman David Ellis and introduced by the former Magnolia Nursery of Chunchula, Alabama—long respected for its contributions to Southern native plant cultivation. This selection stands out for its intense flower color, strong blooming performance, and compact yet vigorous growth.

Flower, Fruit and Foliage

deep red, star-shaped, March to possibly fall

Foliage: The leaves are dark green, leathery, and aromatic when crushed, providing a dense, evergreen appearance year-round.

Flowers: The blooms are the defining feature. Each flower measures roughly 2 inches across, composed of numerous narrow, strap-like petals arranged in a layered, starfish form. In ‘Halley’s Comet,’ the petals are a saturated deep maroon to wine-red, darker and richer than typical seedlings. The color reads almost black-red in low light and glows crimson when backlit.

Flowering is typically heaviest in spring, often with sporadic rebloom through the growing season under favorable conditions—hence its reputation as a “free-flowering” selection.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. "Halley's Comet" thrives best in shaded environments, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens or areas with dappled sunlight. While it can tolerate some morning sun, it should be protected from the intense afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This plant grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.0-6.5. Illicium floridanum is naturally found in wetland areas, so it performs well in soils that retain moisture. Incorporating organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, into the soil will improve its structure and fertility, creating an ideal environment for healthy growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering to maintain consistently moist soil. "Halley's Comet" does not tolerate drought well and should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, which is particularly important in warmer climates.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. Illicium floridanum "Halley's Comet" is well-suited to temperate and subtropical climates. It thrives in areas with high humidity and can tolerate heat, provided it is protected from direct sunlight. In colder regions, it may need some protection from frost, though it generally handles mild winters well.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. An additional feeding in mid-summer can help sustain the plant through the growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and promoting overall plant vigor.

Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Regular pruning is not typically necessary, but it can help encourage a fuller, bushier growth habit. If the plant becomes too large or unruly, it can be cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by root rot if the soil is too wet. Ensuring the soil is well-draining and not waterlogged is key to preventing this issue. The plant is also resistant to deer browsing, making it a good choice for gardens where deer are a concern.

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
